Got outside to finish the last of our winter sowing. 💚 Planted sunflowers, tomatoes, and green beans. Also saw the first robin (American) of the year in our yard. 🥰

Cosmos

I had a few vacant minutes so I sled along some more #WinterSowing

Amaranthus, which I have never grown, but the variety name is “love lies bleeding” which is simply too Gothic to resist.

And Cosmos which are seeds that I collected from last year’s flowers. #GardenJournal2026.

Winter sowing update

They've been righted

With temps of 10C & rain overnight and into tomorrow, I'll be moving them to a shadier & more sheltered location once the rain stops

I don’t know that I should be - it’s only just about time that stratification should be done for some of them, and things may get moving during these next warm days. Anyway, natures has been doing this much longer than I have. Wait and see…

A view of a weathered deck with a long line of various containers with different seeds. Several containers are still partly buried by a large drift of ice and snow

Starting tomorrow, we'll have about a week of temperatures above zero degrees, accompanied by a lot of rain

Then long range forecasts suggest that cold temperatures and snow will return by mid-March

These poor little winter sowing jugs are in for a bumpy few weeks

Circular metal sieve, resting on a bucket, holding large chunks of wood, sticks and stems sifted from potting soil. Within the bucket is the sifted soil that will be used for more milk jug seed sowing.

This will be added to my kitchen scraps bin and allowed to compost in my, currently unfilled, raised beds.

🤦‍♀️ And I wonder why my winter sown seed last year had less than great seed to soil contact = germination.

Sifting this year. 🌱 #nativeplants #gardening #wintersowing

The clear plastic domed tops of two seed starter trays are shown with blue tape and brown twine wrapped around them. The near one is almost buried in snow, while the far one is more visible due to being close to the wall of an enclosed porch that has sheltered it. Under the porch can be seen assorted junk and some English ivy at left. In the foreground, many seedling trees rise out of the snow.

Not much in the way of a picture for today - I was outside shoveling for hours & didn’t remember to take one, and then once the wind got blowing I was too much of a coward to really go back out. 😂 But shown is the current status of some of my seed trays!

Snowy landscape with small and large pots covered in 3” snow among the bare raspberry canes in a small backyard.

Snowy day. I feel rich watching my seeds cold stratify.

The pool full of soda bottle planters completely covered in snow. You can't see them, just rings of round holes that are the tops of the open bottles, and some wire garden fencing around the pool. These get some sunlight in the morning, so the shadow of a wheelbarrow cuts across the pool.

I finally put my boots on. #gardening #wintersowing
