This is not me calling out anyone who recently funded or cancelled a Kickstarter—I genuinely believe most crowdfunders are just doing their best with limited experience. This IS me calling out marketing firms & established creators who say “the trick is undershooting your actual goal.” Shame on you.
Crowdfunding is not a solved meta. Being honest about your needs and goals is the BEST way to prevent overextending yourself, and even then it can still happen. Don't say you're fine with just a light dinner and then be disappointed when there aren't enough snacks to fill up on at the afterparty.
I do not fault creatives who trust bad advice. Most of us are artists first & businesspeople reluctantly. I DO have a personal vendetta against anyone who says "the smart thing to do is to ask for less than you need." It's not, even if it worked for you. Correlation is not causation. You got lucky.
