Landing a big hit is satisfying and effective, and taking a big hit is scary, but the player in disadvantage has a much better chance of clawing back out. We're seeing some dramatic turnarounds in testing - I can't wait to see the high level players go at it!
What we've got going right now, which I'm pretty confident in as the solution, is that we now factor in the amount of garbage an opponent is already dealing with when calculating how much garbage to send. You can still land the big attacks from the first game, but follow-ups are weaker.
We tried lots of solutions! The first was just to reduce the amount of garbage sent, but making a big chain to land a small attack was no fun. We tried various comeback mechanics associated with clearing garbage, but they were always so strong that getting attacked was a good thing!
One thing we struggled with was that garbage attacks in Petal 2 let you get a lot more momentum than they did in the first game, so matches often decided by who was able to land a big attack first. It was easy to snowball into victory and very difficult for the defending player to recover from.
Balancing the CPU players has been a big challenge, especially since the process has exposed a lot of balance issues in the game itself! I think we're really close to getting it dialed in, though - versus matches are feeling really fun and dynamic with the tweaks we've made.
Something neat our programmer @jillkatze.lastwing.net put together: We're currently working on the characters' various CPU personalities, and to help balance them against each other, we can run a "tournament" of 10x speed games between every matchup. It's fun to just watch 'em go!
I know we said Petal 2 would be in public Early Access by now but it's going to be a little longer!! It should be out before Winter is over! We're doing our best!
The "Valentine, you're a Horse" meme image edited to say "2026, Year of the Horse" and also Yosoti the centaur from Petal Crash is there
Never let anyone tell you that Trash Attack isn't a real game mode
Screenshot of Petal Crash for Game Boy Color, showing two players selecting options for a versus match they're about to start. There's a "Board walls" option at the bottom, in which one player has some walls in the corner, and the other player has an X over the board.
Petal Crash sure has a lot of menus and screens. I've been working on setting up all the screens you'd use to configure link cable multiplayer, and getting everything properly synchronized. Board walls from Petal Crash Online are returning, and perhaps I can add brand new cursed wall options.
Whoops I forgot to de-activate the Steam Next Fest demo last night. Anyway I did that now. Please look forward to the Early Access release soon!!
The demo won't work anymore after it's taken down, even if you've downloaded it - it was a limited time thing just for Next Fest. But we're doing our best to make sure you won't have to wait too much longer to play it again!
I'll be taking down Petal Crash 2's Steam Next Fest demo sometime late tonight - please look forward to the Early Access release this Winter!
I'm doing commentary on the Petal tournament!

For some reason the game's not showing up as a part of Next Fest anymore but I swear we were invited and showing up in it before. We've got a support ticket going with Steam now to fix it. What a fiasco...!!
We gave the demo its own page! This should make it easier to try!

What the heck? We're having a bit of trouble showing the demo as available in Steam, but it is actually available to play! Until we get it sorted, try pasting this URL into your browser:

There should be a "Download PC Demo" option on Steam now! We're planning on releasing the game into Early Access this Winter, so don't forget to add the game to your wishlist to get notified!
