THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

We have heard from migrants subjected to ICE flights that guards/federal agents lay out the WRAP on the tarmac as a threat: Do what we say on the flight or you're gonna get put in a straitjacket.

Yesterday I observed 15 shackled detainees being loaded on the ICE Air flight at MSP. In this clip, as the last one hobbles on, staff put away a full-body WRAP restraint, which had been laid out next to the airstairs.

If folks haven’t yet watched the Oscar-nominated documentary “The Alabama Solution,” it delves quite a bit into this, as well. It’s a deeply harrowing, moving film that I can’t recommend highly enough.

ICE detains reporter Estefany Rodríguez in Nashville - Nashville Banner
Reporter Estefany Rodríguez, detained by ICE with no arrest warrant, may face deportation. Her attorneys seek immediate review of the legality of her case.
ICE has arrested and detained a Nashville journalist who reported stories critical of ICE. She’s married to a U.S. citizen and has been seeking asylum here after fleeing death threats in Colombia because of her journalism there.
They’ve already sent her to Louisiana.

Trump’s Justice Dept. reportedly failed to find a crime in Biden’s use of autopen
One former U.S. attorney described the investigation itself as “a disgusting abuse of power,” which was more than fair given the circumstances.
There’s obviously a lot going on, but the fact that federal prosecutors tried to build a criminal case against Joe Biden — based on no evidence, because Trump barked unjust orders — is quite insane.
The collapse of the case doesn’t negate the underlying abuse.

Screengrab from Tucson.com showing one headline, the opening image for a video, and a second headline or caption over the video.
First headline reads: "Florence ICE detaine dead after untreated tooth infection, official says."
Image from video shows an apparent press conference by lawmakers. The speaker at the mic is a woman wearing a cowboy hat. Behind her are two men, one of them in a cowboy hat.
The second headline or caption, placed over the video, reads "Republican-controlled Arizona Senate votes to outlaw Sharia law."
Reckon the Republican-controlled Arizona Senate will next work on health care in ICE custody?

This data center bill cleared the Kentucky House with literally no questions from lawmakers, took less than 5 minutes. Passed 90-8. #kyga26

Older folks are constantly complaining to me about how young people don't use maps.
Of course, I tell them. What would a kid need a map for? We don't let them go anywhere.
If you love maps, exploring and childhoods that are full of adventure, independence and curiosity, we must protect mobility.

The Leavenworth Kansas city commission voted in favor of the permit, 4-1, on Tuesday. Good chance it goes through on second consideration, March 10. Also a good chance citizens will show up and voice their concerns.

Kansas Appeals Court rules in favor of City of Leavenworth in fight over detention center
The court clarified that this is a temporary injunction meant to prevent harm while the lawsuit proceeds; it is not a final judgment.
ICE stopped for now in Leavenworth, KS:
>>A Kansas appeals court has ruled in favor of the city of Leavenworth in the ongoing battle over an ICE detention center at the old Leavenworth Penitentiary owned by CoreCivic.
City leaders to vote on permit as soon as 3-10.

Great data here on the changing texture of historic neighborhoods like Greenwich Village in NYC.
Where I live, in Brooklyn, I would say 80 percent of the permits posted on brownstones show an upward extension, a rear extension and a reduction in apartments -- typically three to one or four to one.

Screengrab from the Boston Globe, showing a statement from DHS. The text reads:
“Detainees are being provided catered meals, continuous access to drinking water, and appropriate restroom facilities for the duration of the delay,” the DHS spokesperson said. “All required prescription medications are being supplied at no cost, and medical personnel are available to provide proper medical care. ICE personnel are conducting regular welfare checks to ensure everyone’s well-being, comfort, and dignity while awaiting departure.”
DHS says everyone on the ICE flight stuck on the tarmac yesterday in the blizzard had meals, meds, bathrooms, etc., and dignity. What do you suppose they mean by dignity?

Sweet host on WNYC wrapped a report on driving conditions just with a charming report on walking: “Right now in New York, it is hard to see more than a block or two.”
Not that you’d want to walk that far right now, necessarily, but you certainly could see well enough to do it.

Back from Dilley ICE facility, WA 11-year-old and dad tell their story
They went from sleeping on the floor in a Spokane holding cell to a complex in the Texas desert, where kids killed time between little, if any, schooling.
Eerily similar to stories Japanese-American kids packing for WWII camps.
>>The fifth-grader needed to pack a suitcase and go with her dad to U.S. Border Patrol’s Spokane HQ....She put into a suitcase clothes, watercolors, drawing paper and two stuffed animals.

Screengrab from a Star-Tribune article. Text reads:
According to court records, Soto Jimenez is a Mexican citizen who has lived in Big Lake, Minn., since 2018 with his spouse, who is a legal resident. Federal agents arrested him on Jan. 14 at his job.
Provinzino had granted Soto Jimenez’s petition challenging his detention and ordered his release by Feb. 13. Four days later, Erin Lins, Soto Jimenez’s lawyer, wrote to the judge that ICE had instead released him from a facility in El Paso, Texas, with no way to return to Minnesota.
Lins said the Texas ICE facility did not return his driver’s license and Mexican Consular ID card.
Then there's Minnesota, where a federal judge yesterday held a U.S. prosecutor in contempt.
The prosecutor expressed deep regret, blamed the workload for their treatment of someone they arrested, and promised to fix it.
