There is actually extraordinary evidence that we are, and you have access to it every time you wake up in the morning. It’s the one thing about the world you can be pretty sure of.

There's a strategic level to the Gaza-fication of the Middle East that goes beyond Israel's razing tactics and applies to theories of victory.

For Israel, victory lies in the damage done by the razing.

For Iran, as for Hamas (and Hezbollah), victory is surviving to emerge from the rubble.

Good Lord, Trump seems to have forgotten that in war, your enemy gets a vote. If the Iranians read this, they will understand he is terrified and desperate, and probably speed up the mining of the straits. Worst war leader in US history.

In this case they also cherry-pick very short texts, which of course isn’t representative of Β«writingΒ» as such.

Orphaned Tactics Oops we did it again

β€œThe war with Iran is little more than the joint targeting process unleashed. The Frankenstein’s monster that is the operational level of war, unsatiated after eating strategy, is now feasting on policy”. @bafriedman.bsky.social

Implicitly it is, otherwise it’s just a pointless post.

In other words, an extremely weak argument. On the other hand if you want to go down this route, there is a whole philosophical school leaning into this, panpsychism, positing everything is in fact conscious. I have more respect for that position than Anthropic bullshitting about its models.

08.03.2026 13:23 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

How is that an argument for calling a statistical calculation conscious?

08.03.2026 11:04 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Or, indeed, require consciousness to explain what they output. I personally think the most useful thing we could do for the discourse is to ditch the Β«AIΒ»-label completely, and just call this by whatever statistical model we’re talking about. (Call an LLM an LLM, not Β«an AIΒ»)

08.03.2026 10:51 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I think it’s a bit of a red herring at the moment. Before we start speculating about Β«alien forms of consciousnessΒ», we must have some extraordinary evidence of that kind of extraordinary claim, and there is just nothing about contemporary AI that suggest a mechanism for consciousness.

Also, we may not know how consciousness works, but we do know how LLMs work, and they way the generate their texts has nothing to do with what we do know about consciousness, and crucially, do not require consciousness as an explanation for their output.

07.03.2026 19:13 πŸ‘ 73 πŸ” 4 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 1

That’s a very silly argument. Just because we don’t know how a particular phenomenon works, doesn’t mean we have to take any random claim about this phenomenon as plausible. Β«Cars aren’t conscious!Β» Β«They might be, we don’t understand consciousness!Β»

This is so utterly gormless and anodyne in the face of something that is actually not confusing but crystal clear. Dorsey is either genuinely incredibly naive or very very dishonest.

In times of chaos, Europe is the muddled power the world needs In praise of the dreaded European working group

”In an age of blood-soaked realpolitik, Europe stands out. Yes, it is meek, a vegetarian in a world of omnivorous geopolitical rivals. [But i]f it is a sin to think that rules matter, the world could do with a few more sinners… the relative sanity found in Europe is a kind of defiance.”

Trump's entire approach is that of a bully. He only picks out opponents he thinks are weaker, and stays well clear of anyone he thinks can punch back. He is, fundamentally, a coward.
