Or, indeed, require consciousness to explain what they output. I personally think the most useful thing we could do for the discourse is to ditch the «AI»-label completely, and just call this by whatever statistical model we’re talking about. (Call an LLM an LLM, not «an AI»)
I think it’s a bit of a red herring at the moment. Before we start speculating about «alien forms of consciousness», we must have some extraordinary evidence of that kind of extraordinary claim, and there is just nothing about contemporary AI that suggest a mechanism for consciousness.

Also, we may not know how consciousness works, but we do know how LLMs work, and they way the generate their texts has nothing to do with what we do know about consciousness, and crucially, do not require consciousness as an explanation for their output.
That’s a very silly argument. Just because we don’t know how a particular phenomenon works, doesn’t mean we have to take any random claim about this phenomenon as plausible. «Cars aren’t conscious!» «They might be, we don’t understand consciousness!»
