TUI President Anthony Quinn currently discussing the findings of the latest recruitment and retention crisis survey findings on RTE's Drivetime programme. Retention of teachers now as big a problem as recruitment, he says, with unsustainable workload driving many away.
The TUI has called for access to full-time jobs for new entrants...It wants more career progression options and a halving of the duration of the two-year PME required to teach at second level...and for a reduction in .... unsustainable workload that is driving many from the profession.
“The continuing inaction of the Department is absolutely startling,” said TUI president Anthony Quinn.
“It’s long been our belief that our policymakers have been happy to ride out the crisis until student demographics change. This is an insult to the students currently in the system,” he said.
'Just 6% think enough is being done at Government level to tackle the crisis, while over three-quarters believe more could be done to remove barriers for Irish teachers who wish to return from abroad.'

The SETU Waterford Branch braved the elements this morning to protest over unsafe conditions in buildings across campus locations that threaten the health and safety of members. Concerns have been raised repeatedly, yet meaningful upgrades have been delayed or ignored. This is no longer acceptable.
The TUI attended the Joint Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science’s launch of its report on apprenticeships today.
Many of the recommendations in TUI's submission were adopted by the Committee as action points.

The first wave survey for the Teachers’ Professional Journeys (TPJ) Study launches next week for all teachers who graduated in 2019 and 2022.
