Good governance isn't theatre. If council feels boring, that usually means the rules are being followed and the work is getting done. That’s what you elect us for! Thanks to everyone who stays engaged. You make our democracy what it is. #localgovernance #makegovernanceboringagain #boringisgood

Had a great time at the Western Local Government Program Alumni Conference. The theme β€” β€œLess Red Tape, More Duct Tape” β€” highlighted the cracks showing in long-standing policies and how municipalities are adapting while we work toward lasting solutions.

When we had a full gallery waiting to hear a motion against #strongmayor powers at the end of a lengthy agenda. Cr. Michelle Graham suggested we skip forward to it out of consideration for those waiting. This was an opinion shared before council declined to accommodate. πŸ‘€

Also every last one of us sells our body every day to some cog in the capitalist machine. But nobody wants to think of construction or desk jobs that way.

Quite right! We can't be *obliged* to. But we should be *empowered* to do so with indemnity. Municipalities are only halfway playing our part in #teamcanada because of legislative requirements not to favour by origin.

The US administration is firing EPA agents responsible for protecting the Great Lakes.

Ontario municipal councillors are responsible for their municipalities' safe drinking water. 60% of our province drinks from the Great Lakes. Every Ontario mayor and councillor should be up in arms.

Twice tonight, I tried to post on FB about EPA firings affecting safe Canadian drinking water. Both posts disappeared immediately, no explanation. Is anyone else dealing with possible FB censorship?

I posted this on Twitter but some have asked to share it here too. It's Doug Ford's wife celebrating Trump's win on election night wearing a shirt that says "Daddy's Home" above a photo of Trump and the White House. It was posted to Kyla Ford's Instagram. They've always backed Trump. #onpoli

I think another piece of that is that we choose different targets for racism. My community has very few people of color. Many of my area's First Nations people look white. People don't think of it as racism when they're saying something crappy about someone who looks like them.

Residential schools are one of the most shameful pieces of Canadian history. We have had racism here and still do. My kids learn more about it at school now than I did, and they're horrified. It helps me to appreciate why it's so important for America to teach about its racist history as well.

Actually, I was wondering the opposite!* Is buying and returning tons of Amazon Basics products a possible drag on the company?

New Research Reveals How the Nazis Targeted Transgender People Last year, a German court acknowledged the possibility that trans people were persecuted by the Nazis

A reminder that like Trump, the Nazis started by revoking the documents that provided legal recognition and protections to trans people. They didn't stop there. Next they subjected trans people to castration, concentration camps, and execution.

Central Elgin’s new bylaw lets officials bill taxpayers for legal fees, even integrity probes.
Retroactivity means past cases can billβ€”at any cost they chose to pay. Whistleblowing will be costly to our
neighbours. This choice deserves scrutiny.

10 years ago, I picked up a bag for a homeless library patron and an uncapped needle poked my leg. I spent a month on medication to avoid contracting HIV. When I got back to work, patrons asked how such a thing could happen to a good person. We chose it when we failed to provide safe alternatives.

Yes! It's a disturbing precedent to set both in terms of mayors bypassing their councils and in deciding that some humans are less worthy of life and compassion.

Today, with 40 other councillors from across Ontario, I ask that the 15 mayors requesting the use of the notwithstanding clause to bypass the charter rights of homeless Ontarians rescind their letter to Premier Doug Ford. We need evidence-based solutions to homelessness that respect human rights.
