The whistles were a reference to the tools parents are using as they patrol Minneapolis schools.

Drive past any school in Minneapolis right now and you’ll likely see them.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told me: “Our officers are highly trained and in the face of rioting, doxxing, and physical attacks, they have shown professionalism. They are not afraid of loud noises and whistles.”

Parents and teachers who spoke with NBC News said children have been fearful and confused amid the heightened enforcement.

“It’s not a mystery to them that something terrible is happening and that it’s happening right around them,” one mom told me.

Confrontations with ICE for parents, teachers and students are real.

Parents have been apprehended at bus stops. Arrests have been made just off of school properties.

One father described the impossible decisions families are facing on a daily basis.

“Every morning I feel like I’m forced with the choice of ‘Do I try to do patrol to protect my daughter and her preschool or do I come to my son’s kindergarten to do patrol here?’” he asked

I spent the last few days speaking with parents and volunteers physically standing guard at schools across the Twin Cities to protect kids from ICE.
