NEW from me today:
Tumbler Ridge is mourning a horrific loss. But how the shooter's identity is being talked about online, and the dangerous links being made to trans people at large, will have resounding and dangerous impacts in the months and weeks to come.

The GRC stands with our journalist colleagues from @thenarwhal.ca and with @amberbracken.bsky.social as they begin their press freedom trial in the B.C. Supreme Court.
It needs people who care deeply and are willing to help fund this work. Please consider a donation to @globalreportingcentre.org
We are based at a university in Canada, which means we fiercely defend editorial independence and we will always remain independent. donate.give.ubc.ca/page/68038/d...
We need independent journalism now more than ever. Not AI slop, not newsrooms owned by billionaires that bend to political and corporate interests. Real journalism made by real people.
And this kind of journalism needs people like you to survive.
I just read the @niemanlab.org’s predictions for journalism, they said “We guarantee the death of most remaining newsrooms.”
At the same time our newsletter written by the amazing @melissakchan.bsky.social says, “Things have never felt so dangerous.”

Every day we feel lucky to work with journalists like @melissakchan.bsky.social. Please read her latest newsletter for the GRC. And consider a year-end donation to the GRC and help fund our journalism in 2026!

I realize tons of orgs are asking for contributions — but please consider donating to @globalreportingcentre.org. The world is in crisis and yet at this important time, newsrooms are cutting international reporting budgets:
Hundreds of animals are killed by trains on railways in B.C. Now the province says it wants to work with Ottawa to reduce collisions, but both governments say the other is ultimately responsible. @ainsliecruickshank.bsky.social reports: thenarwhal.ca/bc-railway-w...
Rail data from this project is part of a larger cross-border partnership with the Howard Centre @cnsmd.bsky.social. Other stories from the broader partnership have been published in @npr.org, @apnews.com, and @evidentmedia.org. cnsmaryland.org/off-the-rails/
Read @ainsliecruickshank.bsky.social's investigation into the wildlife being killed along B.C.'s rail lines and the lack of accountability from the companies that own and operate these tracks.

I've always been so impressed with the incredible journalism produced by @thenarwhal.ca. And I am thrilled we had the opportunity to partner on such an important topic. Collaboration is the key to our work at @globalreportingcentre.org.
For months @ainsliecruickshank.bsky.social has been pouring over documents trying to find out how many animals are killed on train tracks in B.C. Companies are supposed to report rail kills but records she obtained found reporting is inconsistent and incomplete projects.thenarwhal.ca/collision-co...
Railway tracks in B.C. sit far from public view, and that’s one reason many people have no idea how often trains kill wildlife. Weak reporting from rail companies keep the scale of these strikes out of sight.

I had preeclampsia during my pregnancy. One reminder I got constantly from the nurses, OBs, internal medicine doctors, and maternal fetal medicine doctors was to immediately report a headache that didn’t improve after taking Tylenol. This is lifesaving advice for pregnant people with preeclampsia.

NYT headline: “Kennedy Advises New Parents to ‘Do Your Own Research’ on Vaccines” Subheader: “In an interview with Dr. Phil, the health secretary offered false information about vaccine oversight and revealed a lack of basic understanding of new drug approvals.”
“And I’m like, what do you mean, you ‘do your own research’? You running a double-blind study in your living room, dawg?”

Five months captive in Istanbul’s airport: A Sudanese refugee called a Vancouver lawyer from Turkey with an incredible plea for help. Was the U.S. secretly calling the shots?
