these people are in a hell of their own making.

this is especially true of the most visible members of these groups. could a niche tiktok microceleb who has build their audience and formed communities around hating babyfurs educate themselves and do a faceturn? of course not. they'd be eaten alive. they would have no one left.

they must remain in lockstep with their dogma. they must signal their loyalty with credibility enhancing displays. it's the same reason your aunt can't just leave her anti-vaxx facebook group. it's the same reason gay mormon dads come out of the closet to their nuclear families in their fifties.

if you're a member of a community that defines itself by its opposition to an ideological enemy, there is no way to change your mind or entertain new perspectives that doesn't leave you ostracized by your own peers, and blacklisted by everyone who rightfully saw you as a danger to them.

one of the most frustrating dimensions of the puritan problem leeching into our communities is that its members have trapped themselves in their ideology.
