Well they've already classed porn, video game platforms and others as 'high scam risk' so they could just assert that they're doing it for normal financial risk mitigation. It would be hard to prove that it was targeted for reputation reasons if they made sure to create the right paper trail

Imo it’s more like they shut down all the playgrounds for not being profitable and told kids to just hang out at nightclubs with adults and then freaked out bc kids might get alcohol at nightclubs so they banned adults from ever buying alcohol unless they get an invasive background check first

That's a good point, though it makes me wonder if they won't be able to simply not list reputational risk as a motive and largely behave the same.

I wouldn't count out the tendency of even the highest level of the law to apply when certain people want an outcome and not apply when they don't, but that's a problem beyond the scope of this particular legislation anyway.

I think they really can have it both ways; it's a common practice when they are able to pull it off. It's kind of the foundation of the world they're trying to build. That said, it's not the foundation of the current world nor the one we are pushing for, so this is still something we should support.
