Maybe some of us are dumb enough to say "It's an autographed book" when they ask what's in the package.
I apparently fell victim to an over-zealous postal clerk.
This was a discussion I had with a clerk when I attempted to ship a box of MAD magazines to my brother. They told me I couldn't ship media rate because magazines had advertising in them. I told them MAD didn't' have any ads in it. I lost the argument.
A number of people have checked in to inform that this is just NOT true, which is a relief. Next time, I will inform the clerk at the Richard J. Pino Post Office in Albuquerque that a signature in the book is perfectly fine.

This was the first time it's ever come up. I've been asked before if there was a note inside (the one time there was, the guy just said, "...then we just add the cost of a stamp to the overall shipping," which seemed reasonable).
Apparently they DO reserve the right to open media packages. or so I've been told. This is all news to me.
I will likely continue to ship signed books media rate. COME AND GET ME, MAIL COPPERS.
