The flower head of a Helenium plant is shaped like a ball and is made up of numerous disc flowers each of which has yellow m shaped anthers? that emerge from a tube that starts yellow at the base and changes through red to a deep rich brown almost black at the top. The ball shape of the flower head enables different views of the disc flowers some side on as described above and others looking straight down onto individual flowers where what look to me to be five sided jaws are open to allow the yellow m shaped anthers? to emerge.
