Portrait of oceanographer Marie Tharp in her older years with white curly hair, smiling gently at the camera. She sits beside a large, colorful painted globe and in front of world ocean floor maps on the wall. She wears a dark patterned top with a brooch.
Marie Tharp in her younger years, standing at a drafting table and painting one of her pioneering hand-drawn physiographic maps of the North Atlantic Ocean floor. A globe sits nearby; natural light comes through the window. She is focused on her work with brush in hand.

Four photos on the left of GITN topics, featuring the article logo and AAG logo. Text on the right: Geography in the News. Geography in the News (GITN) is an educational series offered by the American Association of Geographers for teachers and students in all subjects. We include vocabulary, discussion, and assignment ideas at the end of each article.
AAGโs Geography in the News is inspired by the series of the same name founded by Neal Lineback, professor and the chair of Appalachian State Universityโs Department of Geography and Planning. For nearly 30 years from 1986 to 2013, GITN delivered timely explainer articles to educators and students, relevant to topics in the news. Many of these were published on Maps.comโs educational platforms and in National Geographicโs blogs. AAG is pleased to carry on the series.
Topics range from examining invasive species to managing animal populations and exploring the cultural and physical geography of agricultural systems and products.
