Something I think a lot of midwesterners are very deeply attached to, but don't necessarily know how to articulate well, is an awareness of the environment drastically changing on a cyclical basis and the signs which show those changes are occurring.
It's very grounding and I know I need that.
that sounds so pleasant!
Greyhound search for buses from Toledo to Detroit showing buses leaving at 7:55a, 8:45a, and 9:45a.
there are some morning Greyhound bus options that will take you to Detroit, so you can sort of make your own connection.
But itβs a bit inconvenient compared to the previous option, and not sure what it looks like for other bus destinations that arenβt Detroit (AA, EL)
Amtrak booking screen for a typical trip from Washington DC to Detroit, showing two trips taking 26 and 37 hours respectively.
Amtrak now only sells the return with a Wolverine connection in Chicago, taking 12 hours you didnβt have spend heading all the way west previously.
Thereβs also a bonkers 37 hour option with a 22 hour!! layover in Toledo, to the 6:30a connecting bus you used to be able to take before.
This is my first time on this train after it has become the βFloridianβ (fka βCapitol Limitedβ).
One negative aspect for Detroit passengers these days: the return trip options no longer provide a nice connecting bus to Detroit, I think because return trips were experiencing lots of delays.
Iβm taking Amtrak to DC, and this connecting bus to Toledo is flying. Only 47min to the Ohio state line from Detroit.
Regina Hendricks and Mary Golson need new roofs. Daisy Jacksonβs bathroom leaks into her living room, and Gail Mitchell has a pipe that sprays water.
Older Black residents in Islandview say they canβt afford repairs β as new buyers seem to manage easily. The latest from @brianarice.bsky.social:

Detroit should get red light cameras and give me the money
the idea that you SHOULD have to carry identification documents is a a product of car dependence, for what it's worth, one of the ways that cars provide a glide path to a surveillance/police state
one thing a lot of detroit establishments could steal from lafayette coney: coat hook abundance.
really annoying when you go into a bar and there's nowhere to hang your coat

100% true story, in Detroit I once saw a car do this and a pedestrian walking around it took the lid off a large soft drink and poured it through the open sunroof.
interesting example of an organization turning tax and benefit law into code and how they're using AI to accelerate this work

the argument from the commenter here was that the complaint is without merit because the mayor didn't personally use the tickets.
but it seems like it's still a pretty huge problem for an official to request concert tickets and then personally dole them out to whomever they please.
relative land use policies in the US vs Canada explain most of this. Buffalo/Cleveland/Detroit sprawled and fragmented the tax base in a way that has not been allowed to happen in Ontario.
nice
the ambassador bridge is still called that. there's a new bridge called the gordie howe bridge.
i would die to defend a multicultural economic zone
This one is wild. Hoping the building kitty corner from this can hang on it looks rehab-able
things i saw in the article:
- she's wasting money on it
- damage to lungs from smoke inhalation
- optimize her IVF
i think it's entirely reasonable to consider future harms even if they are not active and current. long term thinking is good!
i love how easy and fun it is to get around on a bicycle

not usually one for architectural prescriptivism β every home is beautiful β but damn some of these βnewβ builds are testing me
