Thanks for sharing. Reminds me I should update the post with a couple more from recent years.
This is why the phrase comes up in so many of the things I've written about AI.
AI does three main things:
1) dismantle the institutions necessary for democratic society to thrive
2) transfer wealth upwards
3) create the permission structure for (1) and (2)
Users hate AI. So tech made it mandatory. Even if you don't use it, it pollutes what you read and how systems make decisions. The computer's hallucinated word is final.
And it needs all of your data to do it.
In the age of no consent, UX exists to normalized complete acquiescence to surveillance:

I added ’Elements of AI Ethics’ as a card deck on my interactive playing cards website. Now there are three decks you can play around with for critical thinking and workshop exercises.

'Legal & ethical frameworks become analytically and normatively void when the political system that […] employs such powerful technologies doesn't respect human rights or desired values in the first place. There is no current effective global regulation on AI, in neither civil nor military domains.'
Excellent!

New and free: Interactive playing cards for critical thinking.
On this 5-year anniversary of publishing The Elements of Digital Ethics I'm releasing the elements as interactive playing cards on a website – and it's free to use for all.

Literally, at work this morning:
Clinician: Patient should stop medication A, but must keep taking medication B.
AI VR transcription of this: Patient should stop taking medication B.
Seriously NEVER LET A DOCTOR USE AI FOR YOUR APPOINTMENTS. NEVER. UNDER ANY FUCKING CIRCUMSTANCES.
Are you a developer making use of Google Fonts? Don't.
You could try Bunny Fonts.

Frog exclaims to Toad that he is happy. From "Alone" In *Days with Frog and Toad*
“But Toad,” said Frog, “I AM happy. I am very happy. This morning when I woke up, I felt good because the sun was shining. I felt good because I was a frog. And I felt good because I have you for a friend. I wanted to be alone. I wanted to think about how fine everything is.”
It's been five years since I published The Elements of Digital Ethics. Meanwhile the tech industry has doubled down on escalating harm in all areas. 😬

So what does it mean to resist? From viral content that defies the odds, to artists and activists who quietly tweak the system to stay visible, today we explore the subtle and strategic ways resistance unfolds in online spaces.

John Oliver did a terrific job on Last Week Tonight of explaining what Twitter has become, how dangerous it is, and what type of platform you are supporting if you participate on it.

I'm blown away by what supposedly well-educated people are giving completely unpredictable software unlimited access to.
And it bears repeating: this is the type of unlimited access the techbros are seriously advocating for to accomplish the agentic assistance they believe everyone wants.

I get to share how development projects in the digital space can be carried out with compassion. It involves questioning the problem and questioning our own beliefs.

The utterance of "A.I.'s inevitability" is one of the most stark pure performatives I've seen in my time working in higher ed. Every time it is uttered, it is clearly not reporting a fact about the world but instead actively trying to create the reality it narrates. We can and must refuse.

Yesterday Cory Doctorow argued that refusal to use LLMs was mere "neoliberal purity culture". I think his argument is a strawman, doesn't align with his own actions and delegitimizes important political actions we need to make in order to build a better cyberphysical world.
Excellent to hear. Last summer I also did a talk on the world map in Manchester. My first keynote where I was specifically asked to talk about maps.
