As we return to a pre-WW2 order, the middle powers face a challenge With economic stagnation and extremes of inequality comes corrosion of trust in democratic institutions. So Trump may be a symptom, not a cause, of what Carney called a "rupture" with the post-WW2 ord...

Time to publish responsibly: DAFNEE, a database of academia-friendly journals in ecology and evolutionary biology Abstract. The current economics of scientific publishing reveal a profound imbalance: academia pays prices far exceeding the actual costs of publication. R

Did you publish with researchers outside your lab during grad school? Or published as faculty with a student not under your supervision?

I’m collecting examples of cross-lab collaboration in graduate training.

Please share your experience & this post!

Here's an update about #raccoondogs in #Finland! Extensive #hunting has made a dent in the number of raccoon dogs and this is reflected in reduced nest predation of #waterfowl. Also! Raccoon dogs in the north move longer distances than those in the south, unhindered by barriers like roads. (1/2)

Five reasons urban trees make sense Comment: The trees lining our streets and parks are quietly delivering a host of benefits – from cooling and cleaning the air to improving our health and wellbeing.

Native trees support specialist invertebrates, fungi and birds that co-evolved with them - if we only plant exotics, we lose those relationships and end up with cities dominated by generalist species like sparrows and pigeons.πŸ§ͺ🌏 #urban #trees #urbanforest #biodiversity

A graduated nativeness definition for overcoming dilemmas and difficulties of vascular plant species Nativeness is a concept central to biodiversity conservation and invasion biology, but there are several problems related to a classic binary nativeness definition. Nativeness cannot be binary, if is to make sense and be practically applicable at the scale of countries.
We propose a graduated definition, in which species native to neighbouring territories are considered "near-native"

Global change reshuffles species communities: who could interact with whom? We introduce new ways to measure the capacity of species & communities to rewire interactions, which can be used to predict how ecological networks might adapt to changing conditions.

New on European conservation science:

Urban impervious surfaces sharply reduce reproductive success in great & blue tits. 50% increase near nests can halve number of fledglings ➑️ cities shape reproductive outcomes for wildlife.

New on European conservation science:

Concrete-heavy habitats drastically reduce the reproductive success of two urban bird species in Warsaw, Poland. More greenery & natural surfaces could help mitigate these effects.

Lower survival rate among trainees in labs with highly productive mentors raises important concerns about what we value in academia. Many interesting things to stew over with this paper!
