She's been perfecting the art her entire life.
The protagonist is Saffy Walden, head teacher, so it's good if you want a grownup (and LGBT) protagonist for your magical school reading, & also good if you want a novel that understands & admires teaching, while also being a fun, well thought out magical romp. Good times all around. ๐๐
A scruffy little grey and white terrier curled up on a quilt looking solemn next to a hardback library book.
A couple days ago, I finished Emily Tesh's The Incandescent. I'd liked Some Desperate Glory, her debut, but this magical boarding school novel was even more engaging & readable. If you're in a reading slump, this might be a nice one?
Did I like it? I don't know! Was it well crafted? I think yes: it's very thematically coherent and consistent even though it's also so uncomfortable at times. Being human in relation with other humans is hard, & harder still when generational trauma from totalitarianism is at play. ๐๐
Don't read this if you don't want to catch yourself repeatedly saying aloud "WHAT ARE YOU DOING??" to the protagonist. But the title is accurate, as the whole novel is about the struggle to understand situations & other people, & the competing interpretations that are at play. ๐๏ธ๐๐

This morning I finished listening to Booker longlisted Misinterpretation by Ledia Xhoga. What a ride this one is: a woman who works as an interpreter gets too enmeshed in a client's life, due to her own experiences, at the expense of her marriage & mental health. ๐๏ธ๐๐
Dead, dried leaves on a stalk in sunshine, looking pretty despite their, well, deadness.
I swear I have been reading, though I have been rubbish about posting it here. March is rough, y'all. But here's the books. ๐๐
It's like he's practically the only guy doing this, too. The Dodgers subreddit was all giddy over Shohei hugging Hye-Seong Kim at the Japan-Korea game. DR-Japan is increasingly feeling like the finals matchup that would be the most fun to watch in terms of both the baseball & the vibes.
Clair Wills, Lovers and Strangers: An Immigrant History of Post-War Britain. Such a good book, both really smart & really enjoyable. Her memoir on her family, Missing Persons, Or My Grandmother's Secrets, is also incredible.
What a gorgeous rose!
I'm so glad you got to go! I bet it was incredible fun.
His short ghost stories are genuinely rather underrated!
Happy birthday! I give you the first snowdrops of spring here, spotted on the dog's walk this morning.
I want the super rich and corporations to pay their fair share, and then I'm happy to pay my fair share, which does not need to be 0%. I like state parks and library systems and good roads!
I was 11, so 10 seems wise.

Tired? Judgy? Why not both?
the constant headache is a real fun time.
Truly such a lovely novel!
It is a deeply weird weather week, we had a chance of a tornado watch last night (never materialized, thankfully) and then this evening it was spitting down snow on me.
Fwiw the Burlap Bag also does a tomato/vine scented candle! It's nice.

I haven't read the book, but honestly I thought it was pretty fun and snappy.
Well, that was a big inning for Team USA, and sorry to the players on Team GB that I do like quite a bit.
Great Britain's WBC uniform. A white jersey with red piping and GREAT BRITAIN written in navy blue sans serif font across the front; a red jersey with the same logo in white, with white and blue side panels. A navy blue hat with GB in red letters outlined in white and the Union Jack on the side. It looks like it was designed by a high school student aiming for a gentleman's C in their graphic design class.
Checking in on the World Baseball Classic and I'm sorry but Great Britain's uniform is embarrassingly terrible. Did someone design this in Microsoft Word?
Did it feel bad? So bad! Was it slower than my last couple runs? Not really!
Got home very late last night at the concert, had to be on campus bright and early to do professorial things at parents weekend, & then this afternoon, running on too little sleep and water, 3 cups of coffee, & 1 pint of beer, I decided to go for a run. Unhinged choices!
Wow those look delicious
Having a senior dog is tough because there is more to manage & I'm wrestling with what's just my feelings about having an increasingly fragile dog & what's them maybe letting some of her care slip through the cracks.

The vet gave me a two week supply of Chuck's new medication & said they'd call to see how it was going, & today I finally just called them because we ran out on Tuesday & it really was helping with her symptoms & UGH. Anyway we have a refill.
I'm looking forward to her Agatha Raisin/Jessica Fletcher era when she gets there, it's going to be phenomenal.
