Pleased to see that Walgreens has stopped texting "Hi! We've received a prescription. We're not going to do anything until we get a FILL reply back from this text. Hope your phone isn't in the repair shop this week! Reply THIS IS INCREDIBLY UNSAFE WTF to comprehend the situation better than we do!"

Food and Cooking of the Middle Kingdoms A recipe/cookbook project based in Diane Duane's award-winning Middle Kingdoms epic fantasy universe

...But sometimes I also link to new posts over at the Food and Cooking of the Middle Kingdoms site. There's a really nice roast chicken recipe that's kinda late going up over there, and I'm tidying that one right now... foodandcooking.middlekingdoms.com

This weekend's project, for example, is not only about moving the Belgian waffle recipes over, but photographing this different Belgian one, involving REALLY THICK pork chops sizzled in butter and then cooked with apples and cider.

Home - The Mind Palate The new dedicated food site from Diane Duane and Peter Morwood, a (gradual) collection of their food posts from the last three decades

It'd be fair to say I do a goodish amount of foodposting over here, especially since @peter.petermorwood.com and I started moving our food writing off Tumblr and the old European Cuisines site and into mind-palate.com.

Seconding this, as a white dude who came up in the Mountain Music community:

I don't know how they did it, but between Rocky Road to Dublin, Go Lassie Go, and Pick Poor Robin Clean, the songs were *wrong*. Wonderfully performed, but unsettling in a way I can't quite put my finger on. 1/

Hey, re: those #keto waffles: I tested these earlier today. They're not bad. (I mean, they're a bit like eating air. But it was entirely-okay air.) πŸ™‚The recipe made ten or so. gimmedelicious.com/keto-waffles/

Yes, we think by writing and we think by talking, for a start, and one shouldn’t classify β€œoffloading cognition” as immediately harmful just because something is happening outside the brain.

β€œThe snowpack is extremely low across much of the West, not because precipitation was extremely low … but specifically because temperatures were record warm. That is the classic signature of a warming climate on mountain snowpack,” @weatherwest.bsky.social told @edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social

I've used a Brother printer for ages (8 or 9 years now). There are third-party toner sellers that are less expensive, and the Brother printer I purchased isn't precious about off-brand toner, so that's what I tend to use.

Ah crap. Kansas is presumably one of them - which others, if I may ask? (Asking for myself; I try to keep on top of this stuff but nowadays just searching for anti-trans bills get a mix of genuinely urgent new stuff and older things that didn't ultimately go through, so it's hard to keep track.)

(Also I totally coincidentally read this right after an Elizabeth Bear novel - The Machine, which was also really enjoyable - and both stories feature main characters with disabilities using & having complicated relationships with assistive exoskeletons, so that was interesting!)

I recently finished @nnedi.bsky.social's Death of the Author and I can 100% recommend. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing - it's two parallel/interwoven stories, about an author and then the actual story she's written, and both are great on their own and even better together.

Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay, for absurdly good Tang-dynasty-era historical fantasy. Kay often writes tragic characters; this is more of a tragic situation, and I have enjoyed finding the Wikipedia articles corresponding to the events & people therein. Ferghana horses, Li Bai the warrior poet...

Naomi Novik's A Deadly Education is fantastic, & the start of an urban fantasy/"boarding school" genre trilogy that is willing to actually do the work to ask why on earth wizards would send their kids to a dangerous school (i.e. the outside world is even deadlier). The audiobook narrator is great.

As the article notes, FL did this and the gas stations/companies pocketed the difference. There was like one day where there was a notable difference.

Behold NYC's First-Ever Trumpeter Swan A member of the once-near-extinct species has taken up residence in the East River. But why?

Brooklyn has been graced with the appearance of a swan so rare that experts say there have been no recorded sightings of the bird in New York Cityβ€”until now.
