To be clear, I’m not catastrophizing. Schools, districts, and states need to look at where they’re receiving #schoolsafety monies. DOJ for SROs? Ed dept for mental health? SAMHSA?
What’s your backup? Community partnerships? Wrap-around services?

Good question and I’m no expert on trends. I suspect that if the EAS tone was a trend, it was on social media, and therefore not a flagging under the FCC. But if people used it in artistic pieces and a news segment on tv or radio was about it, they would not have been able to air the full piece.

These parent prosection are certainly warranted, but I am very skeptical they would affect the likelihood of future tragedies. In many of these cases, parents are in such denial that they likely can't imagine their kid could become a school shooter, much less being prosecuted for it

More seriously, they’re an over surveillance that imposes certain behavioral norms merely by being present.

Lastly, there are similar laws such as the Geneva Convention banning using a red cross on a white background to only identify authentic medical services. For example, @concernedape.bsky.social fixed an inadvertent violation in an early Stardew Valley patch.
Interestingly, the FCC rule applies to sounds that are similar enough to the EAS that they may accidentally cause a panic. It's not about the boundaries of the law but the potential for misinterpretation and ultimate outcomes.

Today I learned that "no person may transmit ... a recording or simulation" of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) sound outside of an authentic emergency notification or system test. This is important because of yelling fire in a crowded theater AND the boy who cried wolf. www.fcc.gov/enforcement/...
