Interesting that much like his True Grit cinematographer, Lucian Ballard, Hathaway shot some great mid-career noirs while becoming ultimately better known for action/adventure and western films.

If you’re going to try that dish, I would implore you to order it somewhere in the south- or at least, like Oklahoma- rather than (checks notes) Provo, Utah.

The sandwiches look pretty underwhelming, so I’ll just go with the chicken salad (with the oddly specific “light brown toast with melted butter”) and a vanilla shake. And I’m glad the menu describes the mysterious “candy-related accident”, because that was shaping up as a Columbo episode.

According to Joseph Wambaugh, there is at least one onion field near Bakersfield, which is not THAT far from Stockton.

Judging by the detailed map on the front of the menu, Tiny’s was a chain, with outposts near Redding and somewhere around the Salton Sea, in addition to Stockton.

Tiny will make you a plain omelette, a jelly omelette, a cheese omelette, a Spanish omelette, a bacon omelette, a ham omelette, a ham and cheese omelette, even a ham and green pepper omelette…but Tiny won’t make you a Denver or Western omelette because there ain’t no onions in Stockton (apparently).

And maybe some string beans and Lyonnaise spuds, to fancy it up a bit. Perhaps washed down with a Coors stubby.
