It's get arrested and go to jail level illegal to harm them here, even by accident. They'll walk into traffic, expecting all the cars to just stop. They lost all fear of humans and forgot we can shoot things from a distance.
If that happens, the rest of us get a few years of peace, then eternal torment. While they get to be happy in heaven.
That's why they're trying to force it, even though the book says they can't. They think the rest of us need to be sacrificed.
Having to live with some of them, it's really doesn't seem to be. And they don't seem very bothered by that.
Some of them have been convinced by grifters and false prophets, that their eternal salvation can only come at the expense of everyone else's lives. Some just want to see everyone else suffer more then they do, and this is a convenient cover.
They're not connected to reality at all.
