OWL (Palindrome)

Too held in its tide,
tan, a meek owl woke,
emanated its tin, idle hoot.

QUARANTINE (Sonnet)

Her eyes were red.
Her flesh and hair
were thin. The air
was thick with dread.
No hero, led
by love, was there
to scale that bare
and fragile thread.
For better truths,
our stories lied:
a broken flower,
the sickly youth
Rapunzel died
inside that tower.

INTERNATIONAL SHEEP (Palindrome by Pairs)

A nice ram and ewe,
asleep,

teasing songs
in a steeple.

A Swede.
An American.

WORD FACT

โ€œScamperโ€ ultimately comes from Latin โ€œex campoโ€ โ€” literally, โ€œleave the field (of battle, for instance)โ€. โ€œCampoโ€ as โ€œfieldโ€ also gives us the modern English word โ€œcampusโ€.

So, we could say that to scamper is to โ€œleave campusโ€.

WORD FACT

A โ€œpsithurismโ€ is the sound of a treeโ€™s rustling leaves. It comes from Greek โ€œpsithurรญzลโ€ (ฯˆฮนฮธฯ…ฯฮฏฮถฯ‰), which means โ€œI whisperโ€.

INTERSTELLAR WILD (Anagrams)

We speak of the interstellar wild
like we arenโ€™t part of it. She dwells
in we who still sparkleโ€”a fettered,
skeletal star. We flow in her tepid
earth, like weeds, patterns of will
personified. We talk, shatter wellโ€”
written like Deathโ€™s pale flowers.

WORD FACT

Calypso, apocalypse, and eucalyptus are related, sharing the Greek root โ€œkalyptลโ€ (to cover, conceal).

Calypso โ€” โ€œshe who concealsโ€, since in Homerโ€™s Odyssey she keeps Odysseus hidden on her island

[1/2]

Apocalypse โ€” from apo- (away from) -kalyptล (to cover) โ†’ removal of the cover, a revelation

Eucalyptus โ€” from eu- (well) -kalyptos (covered), named for the covering on the bud
