I think you've hit the nail right on the head in that storytelling in marketing is a bit of a dead skill

It's hard to get metrics that translate to c suite speak for the kind of marketing that the moment may need and pr/marketing definitely has to court that set of people rather than the audience they're marketing to.

That's where the marketing dollars would be well spent in my opinion! The fans hunger for a real star in the genre
