Quick question to you all. What are
@oxfordnanopore.bsky.social
charging you all per delivery of kits or flowcells? We're on the Isle of Man (closer to Oxford than Belfast!) and are being charged ยฃ150 (ex. VAT) shipping per delivery. It would cost us less to get on an Easyjet and pick them up...

One from a previous field I worked in that most of the public didn't understand: Why do the tomatoes in the supermarket have yellow spots and it is OK to eat the virus that causes them? ๐

I think people outside of the DNA barcoding bubble donโt realise what part Dan Jansen had to play in the early days of DNA barcoding in the 2000โs. Itโs one of the reasons the best early work on DNA speciation was done on moths.

A close-up photograph of bright green, glossy jade plant leaves (Crassula ovata) with the IPBES logo in the top left corner. Below the image is text that reads: "Biodiversity loss reduces water availability, increases pathogen emergence and exacerbates some forms of water pollution, undermining human, plant and animal health. SOURCE: IPBES NEXUS ASSESSMENT". The image is framed with a green border at the bottom. The succulent's thick, oval-shaped leaves are shown in sharp detail, highlighting their plump, healthy appearance.
This #PlantHealthDay, a reminder: plant health depends on biodiversity, yet its decline affects water availability & quality while increasing disease emergence. ๐งช
@ipbes.net #NexusAssessment shows these connections are vital for functioning ecosystems. ๐
Let's protect plant diversity!

My guilty pleasure is analysing eDNA data from my own country, the Isle of Man. It's such a tiny Island but also the only whole-nation UNESCO Biosphere. Taxa Genomics uses locations on the Island for method development and I'm always excited to see what the sequences say about that point in time.

I have mixed feelings about the press reporting the five-year anniversary of COVID. My work back then to set up the Isle of Manโs testing laboratory is still my proudest scientific achievement, but the personal and professional fallout is still raw.

Yes. When Trump is calling Zelensky a "dictator" then the post-WW2 checks and measures should really be taking priority.

A quick bump for this. If you're looking for an eDNA role to develop applied ecological services, whilst also getting to do some eDNA R&D within the only whole-nation UNESCO biosphere, then this role might be for you. Post-doc, ยฃ42k-ยฃ46k with significant tax breaks as we're a low-tax jurisdiction.

Two photos of Anna, a young white woman using an electric wheelchair, wearing a blue lab coat that fits her well with tables and dry-lab equipment in the background. Text reads: "A team of researchers and designers led by UCL is looking for wheelchair users working in wet lab environments to user-test what is believed to be the first-ever prototype of a lab coat adapted for wheelchair users."
Do you know a UK-based wheelchair user who works in a lab and would be willing to user-test our prototype of what is believed to be the first-ever lab coat adapted for wheelchair users?
Please share far & wide! Interest form: forms.office.com/e/66FhcQjqRT

A white bucket containing about 20 rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus), an olive brown crayfish species with a rust red spot on each side of the carapace.
๐งช๐ฆ New from the lab led by Elle Sawyer: over 40 years, invasive rusty crayfish in Wisconsin lakes have become smaller (doi.org/10.1111/fwb....). What's the cause? We investigated lake temperatures, productivity, and intraspecific competition, but answers remain TBD.

Good news, Altmetric has now started watching BlueSky for mentions of publications. And by the way, provides an easy comparison between this and the old site for a recent preprint of mine which I posted simultaneousl at both. Numbers speak by themselves !

A bright red crab with an orange carapace, pink eyes, and light blue patches on the face. It is standing on algae covered rocks and has some algae stuck in its mouth.
For this #Crustmas #ArtAdventCalendar crossover event we have a Sally Lightfoot crab snacking on some algae. These agile crabs can move in four directions and are said to be named after a Caribbean dancer. They also have a fun scientific name - Graspus graspus

Manx Wildlife Trust receives King's Award for Voluntary Service
It's the MBE equivalent for voluntary groups in the UK and Crown Dependencies
It was fantastic to wake up to this news this morning! I've been a trustee of MWT for almost six years now and I know how valuable volunteers (and staff) have been to the progress the charity has made over the last decade.
