Oh, wow. Just watched the Columbia serials last night after watching a Biography on the Phantom. It always seemed old timey to me, no more so than Tarzan or Buck Rogers tho.
I think the premise is awesome and works for adaptations. Maybe someone will hit gold with it and create ongoing interest.
