BBC’s Ben Taverner: ‘Mobile internet still down in central Moscow. Pedestrians, couriers and taxi drivers look lost. People connecting to wifi outside cafés/banks. Vedomosti says sales of pagers, paper maps and landline phones through roof. And now even wifi in the Duma (parliament) reportedly out!’

Horrified that Travelodge would turn away vulnerable booked customers (with ID, just not a passport) - very poor.

All you Chat GPT fans who can’t be arsed to write your own words or think it’s great fun to drain the planet so you can show what your cartoon work persona looks like, well this is what you’re funding. It’s basically Skynet.

@lbc perhaps you can share with Tom Swarbrick. Seems the preacher was actually being pretty offensive.

How far back in time can you understand English?
An experiment in language change
This is super interesting.
The last one I can read fluently is 1600.
I can then still read it and figure out (almost) every word, with some puzzling, but then lose it almost completely at 1200.

Poetry >Wendell Berry >The Peace of Wild Things
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
The Peace of Wild Things, by Wendell Berry. Heard it for the first time today - just beautiful ❤️

Hackers Expose Age-Verification Software Powering Surveillance Web
Three hacktivists tried to find a workaround to Discord’s age-verification software. Instead, they found its frontend exposed to the open internet.
Oops. Turns out Persona, Discord’s age-verification service, was secretly screening selfies against government watchlists AND accessible by the feds. It's backed by Peter Thiel.

The video from Nigel Farage gives the
impression that he was individually refused
access.
Farage is in the Maldives.
200 miles away from the Chagos Islands which are not a
tourist destination.
Hasn't got the paperwork and wasn't on the 'aid boat' he's pointing at which is trying to establish a settlement for four people on the islands.
How is this serving Clacton? Who paid?

I see the University of York is offering a fixed-term post in public history for the same salary (£37k) I earned for a fixed-term post in public history, also in Yorkshire, in 2012. Had the rate risen with inflation it would now be £53k.

Team USA's Elana Meyers Taylor wins gold in monobob
The veteran bobsledder finally became an Olympic gold medalist on Monday. But to Meyers Taylor, the most special prize is sharing the moment with her kids.
“Nobody in their right mind would say, ‘Hey, a 41-y-old woman is going to have a shot at another Olympic medal in a speed and power sport. I want my children to know that people told their mom that it can’t happen and then she went for it anyways.” www.nbcnews.com/sports/olymp...

UK bank bosses plan to set up Visa and Mastercard alternative amid Trump fears
Exclusive: First meeting to be held over domestic payments system aimed at reducing reliance on US networks
“If Mastercard and Visa were turned off, it would send us back to the 1950s,” before cards dominated the UK economy, and businesses wholly relied on cash, one executive familiar with the project told the Guardian.
“Of course, we need a sovereign payments system.”
