Select with search (aka autocomplete) by paulrobertlloyd · Pull Request #1700 · nhsuk/nhsuk-frontend Description Many services require users to choose from a large but limited number of options; too many to display as radio buttons, and yet selects are to be avoided as they can be difficult to use...

Accessible autocomplete is great but it’s frustrating how it’s remained in semi-supported limbo for years.

We are trying to update it and bring it into the NHS design system at github.com/nhsuk/nhsuk-...

It’s a tricky component to get right though!

It’s not bad! Video is far better for communicating this stuff than text and images.

Yes, agree! Has there been a video released of the demo at all?

I used the bog standard Notes app on iPhone / Mac to collect links and thoughts through the week.

Boring but quick.

Week 86: Red books Notes on checking MMR vaccination history after a measles outbreak in North London.

This week’s weeknotes are notes on checking MMR vaccination history, after I get a text message from my kids' school about a measles outbreak in North London.

I think both the MOJ and Home Office versions may have predated the GOVUK one?

The MOJ one suggests it's a leaner (smaller) version of the GOVUK one, more suitable for internal services. I’m not totally convinced by that, but if there’s good evidence for it then there’s a case for upstreaming it!

It’s sounds trivial, but I reckon it’s help if there was a shared GitHub organisation, and the shared Slack instance was more official.

I don’t mind that. They add to rather than overlap with the GOVUK design system, and stuff can and does get upstreamed to it.

Also: maintaining something is way harder than starting something new.

This happens a lot. There must be so many duplicating implementations of the govuk design system across all the different languages and frameworks.

(We have a similar issue in the NHS)

Ahh I ❤️ this.

Once you’ve learned enough to relax and get down most slopes, skiing basically becomes a way to enjoy being up in the mountains.

At least that’s how I approach it, being not particularly athletic.

Laptops can be helpful for dyslexic children. Potentially for left-handers who struggle with handwriting too?

But I’m not sure about going all-in. 🤔

The ski mountaineering event at the Winter Olympics is incredible and ridiculous. Running up steps with the skis on your back!

Super fun to watch.

Why we are reinvesting in the NHS prototype kit - NHS England Digital Frankie and Mike explain why we revived the NHS prototype kit, the benefits of prototyping in code and how digital teams in the NHS can get started using it.

Good luck! Here’s how I’ve approached this at the NHS: digital.nhs.uk/blog/design-...

(Along with training and community-building)

It’s a hard slog though!

New roundel needed? 😀

We already have them for coaches, taxis and river transport, so it’s not out of the question.

And let’s also mention how “30 free hours” is actually 22 free hours…

Self-serve (ala Notify) but with really great support.

The PaaS team helped me out of a pickle with some database back ups once, and I was very grateful!

Yep pretty much! That’s why it was so great.

It didn’t quite have the integration with GitHub to do review apps (which is the killer feature for deployment workflow) but it was close.

I would also make it more opinionated. Ie not just docker container hosting, but a small selection of recommended stacks (Node, Python, Postgres, whatever).

That way product teams don’t have to take responsibility for doing as much system maintenance and upgrade work.

A photo of a brick wall on which is an old, faded hand-painted sign saying COMMIT NO NUISANCE

Saw this old sign the other day.

I probably need reminding of this sometimes.

Although can you commit good nuisance?

Encouraging people to drive further to get cheaper fuel feels like a potential unintended consequence of this…

Closure of the service to file your company accounts and tax return How to prepare for the closure of the online service to file your accounts and Company Tax Return.

Which is also controversial, see www.gov.uk/guidance/clo...

But I don’t think it has to be either market or a govuk service. It can be both.

Maybe there’s not a strong user need here outside of sat navs and so on though? 🤷‍♂️

Is there no official GOVUK service for this? I can see the benefits of an API, so that it can be incorporated into other products like sat navs, but should there be a GOVUK service for it too? 🤔
