It's 2026.
Puberty blockers have been banned on the basis of a fake study conducted by a generalist paeditrician.
Hormones for under 18s have been banned on the basis of a fake review conducted by a head injury specialist.
Both remain available for cis kids because that's 'different' somehow

What's amazing is that in the 80+ years since WW2, simply opposing every war, knowing nothing else about it, has shown it will become the correct, accepted position over time. It's the political stance equivalent of investing in the S&P 500: safe, a little boring maybe, but outlasts all others.

It's not that AI is useless.
It's that AI is useful like asbestos was useful.

It’s so weird that not so long ago, like, less than 20 years, the progressive feminist position was gender de-segregation in sport and other male dominated spaces. Then the terfs came along and convinced the mainstream that the most progressive feminist position is that women are weak and feeble.

A pre-colonial Māori wooden carving of a kurī, a breed of dog. The wooden figure is a pale white-brown, and depicts the upwardly-curved tail characteristic of this species of dog.
Another one from the “humanity throughout history has always been making little guys” archives! This comes from Aotearoa New Zealand, and is a kurī, or dog, made from kānuka wood. The only known pre-colonial Māori carving of a dog, they were found within Moncks Cave at Christchurch in 1889

As a human being you have the right to be able to understand the world. That is why education is so important.
Any technology that hinders your understanding (even if it seemingly gives you capabilities) is deeply in- and anti-humane.

you have to have a pretty impoverished vision of God if you're able to convince yourself that (a) starting a war will somehow trick God into doing something and (b) that God will pat you on the head for it upon return

so much cultural and political effort gone towards making a project of pacifism and an end to war seem like a soft, prosaic concern of comfortable people rather than an essential part of the project of justice and human flourishing

I know it’s difficult right now, but I insist that you seek and enjoy beautiful things, even if it seems frivolous or irresponsible in the face of overwhelming horror. I want you to feed yourself artistically, spiritually, and literally, because you can’t Do The Work when you’re starving.

I do actually agree with the political commentators that you can’t extrapolate today’s result and assume that the greens will do well in the next general election, which is why we all need to get behind them and make damn sure the worst politicians lose their seats

it's true that trans people don't deserve to be rhetorical cudgels by republicans but also we don't deserve to be empty platitudes. we don't want validation and affirmation, we want healthcare, freedom from violence, freedom to be in public spaces, freedom.

I know cis people don't realize the cruelty, so with gentleness and empathy for them, let me try to explain.
Being trans is difficult. Instinctively, you already know this because you think it would be better not to be trans.

I urge you to fill in this consultation if you can - with this very helpful support from Amnesty International - although AND because ! it is heart-breaking that this country has sunk so low that Amnesty suggest in a number of cases to provide no answer as the terms of the question are so evil

the whole thing is of course completely revolting. 20 YEARS to settlement for refugees? no settlement if you’ve ever had a criminal conviction or a tax debt? 10 YEARS added if you’ve ever received benefits? partners and children on their own routes to settlement? What are you even TALKING about

When you spend nearly all your time at home and can’t go anywhere or do anything, the things many call “conveniences” or “nice to haves” actually become necessary to keep going, and to keep sane.
It’s horrible feeling imprisoned in your own body.

None of my skills went away when I got two shotted by mental illness and long covid, I can still do most of the shit I used to be able to do - I just can't do it reliably enough that anyone will fucking pay me for it. My one good day a month is not maximally exploitable you see.

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday.
It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.

I don't know about that, but I will say that great wealth is like the One Ring: Often the person with it thinks they are wielding it, but ultimately it wields them, and for its own ends, not theirs. It takes a strong person to resist its temptations, and that sort of person is not likely to seek it.

In my ongoing attempts to give you a break from *gestures widely* THE HORRORS:
Let's talk about the utterly bizarre science of cats' purring.
Here's a weird starting point:
There are NO cats (Felidae) that can BOTH roar AND purr.
Cats that roar = genus Panthera
Cats that purr = genus Felis

Just fyi. On Friday, Lord Falconer, who's shepherding the assisted dying bill through the Lords, admitted that he thought it was fine if someone chose to die because they didn't have enough money for care
If you're left wing and support the principle, I really need you to look at the bill's details

10x10cm square sticker of a dark grey hare blowing on a yellow horn that is being carried by two white mice. There is a cloud like steam coming from that horn and in it is a text "nobody is free until everybody is free". The background is bright red with black and blue stars.
