Got post from @ipbes.net today 😁 Great to see the Nexus assessment report in full. What a journey...

Bluesky Map Interactive map of 3.4 million Bluesky users, visualised by their follower pattern.

I made a map of 3.4 million Bluesky users - see if you can find yourself!

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

Point of no returns: researchers are crossing a threshold in the fight for funding With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

yeah, application rates (and therefor likelihood of rejection) increase every year as many countries slash their national research budget...
As also featured in many nature posts lately www.nature.com/articles/d41... & www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Yeah, only 4 projects with Austrian involvement will be funded (does not distinguish between lead or not). From our institute alone I know of 7 different consortia πŸ™ˆ

Same success rate here... With my country funding a maximum of 4 projects overall, not too optimistic though ...

Great review and agree on the timeliness! Missed some other global intercomparisons (like BTC, or focussing on ES-M) as well, but not any greater community building (just different clubs of people it seems). Also closer coupling with biophysical models are needed (something we are working on...)

Critiques of AI are valid; but many climate-based arguments reveal our bias toward small individual actions over real systemic change.

Nice. Just be careful with applying for decisionmaking and interpretation as this metric is critically dependent on our global PNV layer, which is not peer reviewed, has known uncertainties in regions, and also does not measure "historically forested" areas as claimed in the paper...

Left side contains a statement from Dr David Obura, IPBES Chair, regarding the US withdrawal from IPBES and extinction threats to over 1 million species. Right side shows a photograph of a man wearing glasses, dressed in a dark jacket and grey shirt, seated at a conference table with a microphone. The IPBES logo appears at the bottom with the tagline "Science and Policy for People and Nature". The design features white typography on the dark green background, creating a professional contrast. Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

It’s reached that time of year again where I gently suggest you hang on to your manuscripts and submit them early in 2026. Otherwise they’re likely to just sit on a virtual to do list for the next 3 weeks sending auto-reminders to editors/reviewers. πŸŽ„

I invite those interested in the matter to also read Chapter 3 of the Nexus Assessment ( zenodo.org/records/1385... ), which provides a comprehensive overview of future sectoral interactions also for non conservation area related issues.

How are we going to navigate this challenge? We argue that integrated spatial planning (GBF Target 1) can provide a key way forward to maximize positives and minimizes negatives outcomes.
In the planning for future conservation areas these interlinkages should be explicitly considered.

We highlight that any expansion of conservation areas can have positive and negative consequences across the Nexus.
These effects are pervasive and vary in magnitude across realms, protection governance types and sectors.

Jane Goodall, primate expert and conservationist, dies aged 91 Goodall was a pioneer in her field, both as a female scientist in the 1960s and for her work studying the behavior of primates

Earth lost a conservationist and scientist like no other, and I am saddened profoundly by this news. Dr. Jane Goodall changed lives and attitudes about conservation and respect for nature wherever she went. A gifted leader in every way.

Shifting the baseline for waterbird and seabird conservation in europe, risk assessment over one century - Biodiversity and Conservation European waterbird and seabird populations have been threatened by anthropogenic activities for decades. Effective strategies are needed to restore both populations and their habitats. However, the temporal period used to define the state of reference when setting restoration targets requires careful considerations to avoid the risk of shifting baseline. A risk of shifting baseline occurs if a population decreases before the time period used to set a baseline. In Europe, most bird monitoring schemes started after the 1970s, yet significant changes in population trends were already reported earlier in the 20th century. We assessed the risk of shifting baseline for 88 out of 170 waterbird and seabird species breeding in Europe. Building on historical ecology, we reconstructed population trends between 1900 and 2018 from information collected in both historical literature and monitoring scheme reports. Historical trends confirm variations in population trends for several waterbird and seabird species over the period 1900-1970, with 35 decreasing species, 38 fluctuating species, 15 increasing species and 82 species with unknown trends. A high risk of shifting baseline was identified for 28 species, for which restoration targets must consider historical trends spanning at least a century. The risk was low for 12 species, probably low for 41 species, probably high for 7 species and uncertain for 82 species. Our study highlights the crucial role of historical data collected prior to the large-scale implementation of standardized abundance monitoring, as it allows for the identification of appropriate baselines to guide the restoration of waterbird and seabird breeding populations.
