We'd be doing a lot more for democracy if we tackled the route by which Mad Liz Truss became Prime Minister.

The PM actually holds an almost unlimited amount of power.

Unlike the tiny number of hereditary peers.

It's maddening because his fundamental stupidity is obvious in quite literally every public statement he makes. He doesn't understand half the words he reads off teleprompters, evinces no familiarity with very basic concepts, and regularly asserts completely inane nonsense.

I am in favour of universities enriching people's lives and developing their humanity through love of learning.

But argue for this on its own terms. Not by a spurious appeal to the past.

For hundreds of years people went to universities because it was the only way to get into the professions.

A good modern university education gives you the critical thinking skills to identify fallacious arguments based on romantacising the past.

When Robert Jenrick was Housing Minister, he rolled out a β€œGreen Housing Revolution”:

It includes Heat Pumps, reducing fossil fuels, solar, preventing climate change etc.

He’s now pretending he’s Mr Reform anti-Net Zero.

HMS Dragon sails for Cyprus – what it takes to prepare a warship for operations at short notice - Navy Lookout Today, HMS Dragon left Portsmouth on her way to the eastern Mediterranean, primarily to protect Cyprus from Iranian drone or missile attack. Putting aside the wider arguments about Royal Navy readines...

When the RN decided to deploy HMS Dragon, she was in dry dock and was not expecting to go back to sea for about 4 weeks... The real scandal is the RN’s overall lack of assets, historic issues with the Type 45 destroyers and a shortage of spares...

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public.

I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are.

1/ Here's what I can share:

You obviously weren't around in the 1970s.

That fabled land that the Tories, Reform and the Right-wing media are so keen to return us to.

In those days, when something broke, it stayed broke.

β€˜I wish I could push ChatGPT off a cliff’: professors scramble to save critical thinking in an age of AI As AI has upended the way students learn, academics worry about the future of the humanities - and society at large
