My grandpop grew up hoeing tobacco as the son of sharecroppers. He joined the Mississippi ROTC and then the fourth infantry division, because infantry combat was an easier path in life than tobacco farming.
She had a prominent facial scar from a pressure cooker that exploded while preserving tomatoes. The minute she could make a living teaching school, she never looked back.
My wife's grandmother ALSO had a facial scar from an exploding pressure cooker down on the farm.
My grandma at 90 could vividly remember the pain of being hauled 20 miles over dirt mountain roads in an unsprung horse drawn buckboard to the tuberculosis hospital where there was a doctor to set the arm she broke as a young girl on the farm.
Three of my grandparents grew up farming in the early 20th century, and as soon as they hit adulthood, they did everything possible to make sure they and their children would never have to do it again.
Anybody who romanticizes pre industrial farming is a bonafide moron.

That night, an attempted British attack was thwarted by a sudden, violent storm, allowing the Americans to finish their trenches and harden their defenses.
Within two weeks, the redcoats were forced to evacuate Boston, boarding dozens of ships, sailing over the horizon, and leaving Boston free.
According to Abigail Adams, British commander General Wiliam Howe exclaimed upon seeing the new earthworks,
