I feel uncertain, posting things like that, but pushing back against the "lone hero" narrative was Theme Number One from Day One on PRACTICAL DEFENCE.
Lone Hero is a seductive idea, but hasn't done our society any favours.
Can I sell that theme AND have explosions and sword fights? TIME WILL TELL

This is one of 2025's best movies. But you won't get to see it compete at the Oscars.

It's called Nobody, and it earned almost $250 million on a $10< million budget. A future is coming for small, risky films — with or without the Oscars. We explore: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-film-t...

There's an article on the BBC asking if Timothée Chamalet has "lost his shine" and going in depth about the Oscars race, and I know it's very boring to say "i don't care" about something that other people clearly enjoy but god I hate awards chat, we only have one life on this planet, my god

Can we PLEASE skip the part where the UK experiments with fascism/faragism/trumpism and go straight to, say, a national Green New Deal and a huge arts revival?

BBC Charter Review Public Consultation The government is consulting the public to aid decision-making on the terms for the BBC Charter’s renewal and any changes needed to help the BBC to continue to serve the public.

Right, I've replied to the BBC Charter Review consultation. It took me about 40 minutes but that's because I gave a good 195 words in every 200-word box. I'm sure they will read my replies intently and weigh them in their hearts.

Anyway, you can go faster: dcms.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...

Speaking of I, Claudius – look at this line from Claudius’ last speech to the senate:

"The dead will come to life! The man who dwells by the pool will open graves and deliver Rome up again."

... Screenplay by Jack *Pulman*, based on the novel by Robert *Graves*.

Uncredited, but so very clever.

I *think* the Depression would have happened on the basis of the stock market tanking, alone – the bankruptcies being effect, not cause. But what would happen if millions of middle-class folks declared bankruptcy while the billionaires still had all their stocks: just the admin avalanche effect?

I don’t think Trump and his people are capable of engineering “distractions,” I think the mind-numbing chaos we see every day is straightforwardly the result of giving the dumbest, cruelest, most corrupt, most selfish people of a generation near-unmitigated power

Just curious ... What happens if millions of Americans all file for bankruptcy at once?

Celebrating International Women's Day by enjoying the dawning realisation on here of how rotten Pixar is. Maybe I didn't actually moan enough about Disney/Pixar studio culture when I fled LA for Britain as a mental health basketcase in 2014!

This has been going on since at least 2007, and spread to Disney and anyone else wanting to make films 'the Pixar way.' I swear they just didn't know how to read a script. The hand-wringing over expenses – but sure we can rewrite a movie that's mostly animated! Absolutely maddening.

I have resting 'ask me for directions' face, and when I was living in Vancouver during the Bush years, I was regularly approached by Americans who would proceed thus: 'Hi, I didn't vote for Bush, can you tell me how to get to...'

I dunno, I've only accidentally tried to add a 1099, but I don't recall it asking for anything other than taxes I knew I didn't have to pay. I've only used it after moving abroad (after TurboTax nearly gave me a nervous breakdown) but it may be worth checking out.

Have you tried TaxSlayer? It's free under a certain income threshold and remarkably straightforward, even for someone with as many weird overseas exceptions as me.

"Divide and conquer" has been the explicit policy of marketing for 20y at least, paired with narrowing pigeonholes and affirming the identity of those who fit in them by not making/marketing for anyone else. I really want someone to study what this has done to gender discourse, too.

Well, a lot of them have followed Lasseter to Skydance now, which is a dumpster fire, so maybe consigning them to the flames is an option.

My sister worked at Pixar for about five years and had the same sort of experiences with the same director (minus the ethnically specific harassment). When she complained to HR she was told the lax attitude to sexism was compensation for lower pay, to attract successful directors. It's all true.

Report it to abuse@gmail.com – impersonation and spam are both TOS breaches. If everyone reports these they might start to realise there's a problem. They're almost always from Gmail accounts.
