I sometimes worry that too many people think being a good critic means being a self-righteous dick about every little thing and I think far too many miss the point that you can't critique anything if you don't know how to love something.

"i will slurp down swastikas all day but do not let me see one boob" is an excellent filter for awful people. i, for one, hate nazis and love boobs, and i'm brave enough to say it

NFL free agency news today on Bluesky has been tremendous. Last year at this time there was next to no breaking free agency news on here. Things change!

Problem Child | Eli Cugini Pixar isn’t just dithering about diversityβ€”it has become visibly scared of children themselves.

very excited for this to be out in the world: i wrote about repressed queerness in Elio, child surveillance in Inside Out 2, the post-Lasseter crisis, and the figure of the child in Pixar for The Baffler

From the article: β€œThe photo wires are lousy with photos of the Secretary of State sliding around in shoes that seem aspirationally sized-up to appeal to his boss's belief that β€˜you can tell a lot about a man by his shoe size.’ Here he is ridin' loose in the Oval Office.”

A zoomed-in crop of the previous picture, where Vance’s shoes look at least a size or two too big. And Rubio’s similar-looking shoes appear *several* sizes too big.

cannot stress enough that "separate the art from the artist" was meant for private individuals reconciling the art they love with its flawed creators and not meant for the ceo of a company driving a dump truck of money up to a bigot's front porch

Even white Dems make this mistake constantly:

When they see 90%+ of Black voters voting for a candidate, they cannot accept that this means that the candidate is an overwhelmingly better choice than the others.

Instead, they believe that "Black people vote for Black people! Racial solidarity!🀑"

i hear this, but also believe β€œif we ignore or change all the rules in our favor, we’ll get to make new rules (which will obviously then last forever)” is the pretty clearly the wrong way to go about it, long-term
