My brother fought in the infantry and lost soldiers in Afghanistan. The press used to report deaths before families had been told and I would check my phone over and over, scared it would ring.
I went to the inquest of one of his killed men. I saw his red-eyed parents, girlfriend and baby daughter.

Scot Gov delays marine protection (again) until AFTER May 2026 election
Lines on a map are NOT protection! Destructive bottom trawling continues in our protected areas, devastating vital habitats. The costs of this delay are severe.

How about we could shine the spotlight of a study of 2.4 million children on the issue instead?
Victoria Paterson and I are abseiling off a building here at the University of Glasgow to raise money for student expeds. This is to help disadvanaged students take up these amazing, life changing opportunities @uofglasgow.bsky.social

I've really enjoyed the High Republic. Amazing to get so invested in a Star Wars story without the Skywalkers and Sith (well maybe Sith....). More big, joined up stories please. What's next?
I found this article on neurodiversity in conservationists very moving and encouraging, for professional and personal reasons.

Questions to @jlindstrom.bsky.social
It is the cleaner fish fishery yes. Wrasse are totally overlooked here despite their ecological importance, and the fishery for them has been very badly run. Protection in MPAs is a step forward, but thereβs still more to do on the wider fishery.
An important development is that these fish have been recognised as βtypical speciesβ of protected features. There are a lot of other species and places which can benefit from this approach. More to come on this.
And to our relatively new βregulator of regulatorsβ Environmental Standards Scotland, who picked this up and required action from Government. It has all taken too long, but progress has happened.
Credit is also due to David Donnan and colleagues at Nature Scot for commissioning and supporting our work www.nature.scot/doc/naturesc...
Some good conservation news. The Scottish Government has closed >20 MPAs to wrasse fishing. This is a direct result of our teamβs research and the tireless efforts of @siftscotland.bsky.social
