The UK scandal of women handcuffed while in labour: ‘I was so shocked when the restraints weren’t removed’ Pregnant women prisoners in England are being handcuffed to prison officers – often male – during intimate vaginal examinations and long, agonising births. Will this dehumanising treatment be stopped?

This is appalling

Mattel Launches First Autistic Barbie Doll On January 11th, Mattel launched the first Autistic Barbie doll, designed in collaboration with the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network. Featuring unique articulation and accessories for autistic representation, the doll aims to celebrate diversity. While it has received positive feedback, some concerns regarding stereotypes and representation have also emerged.

I have been watching, reading and listening intently over the last few days as Autistic people and the wider autism community dissect Autistic Barbie. Here are the things that have stood out to me the most about Mattel's newest doll.

Nadim Zahawi arrived in the UK from Iraq as a child refugee. His family claimed asylum once they were here. Today he has joined Reform who will stop all in country asylum applications. Under his new party, his own family fleeing persecution would be immediately deported.

Notes from a short stay: leaving prison While a great deal of recent media coverage has been on prisons, little light is shone on the reality of the day a person returns to society

The first day out of prison isn’t about rebuilding a life. It’s about surviving bureaucracy without slipping up.

How the government captured the BBC A right-wing cabal, largely unaccountable, is waging war on the principles that made our public broadcaster great. It must not succeed

Nearly two years ago, I wrote about the extraordinary influence of former Tory spin doctor Sir Robbie Gibb on the BBC. It's still a helpful backgrounder for what's going on now. New readers start here: www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/media/...

European Movement signatories on a first draft of the ECHR. Credit: ECHR

75 years ago today, the European Convention of Human Rights, ECHR, was created. The UK played a key role in shaping it.
We should celebrate the ECHR & the vision of all who brought it to life.
We must resist regressive & cynical moves to rip us out of the convention!
