In the 1920s, there was an enormous Klan-aligned caucus in the House of Representatives that passed an immigration restriction bill designed to keep out Catholics and Jews because they supposedly posed an existential threat to American civilization. 100 years later, here we are.

How’s that for “Western canon”?

I’ve read The Iliad a few times & as complex as it is about war, it never loses sight of the humanity of its fighters. “Godlike” Achilles and Hector “breaker of horses” are important bookends, with gods and humans in between.

Hegseth and Trump are every shitty, hubristic commander Homer mocks.

I believe that a person with a solid moral architecture already has particular and conscientious language prepared for the loss of human life.

“Blitzkrieg” is a perfectly fine word for a fascist to use, tbh.

It was six years ago today, Friday the 13th, when the NYC DOE decided that this would be the last day for in-school classes. I picked up our 1st grader nervous, but calm and preparing to endure a bit of inconvenience, like every New Yorker does. We had read that COVID was spreading in New Rochelle.

Stephen Miller complaining about the UK finally eliminating heredity nobility from their legislature is a perfect encapsulation of how perverse it is to have these people in charge during the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

This is a terrible unnecessary tragedy. I grieve for the families and loved ones for their loss and also that they must endure the psychopathic indifference of our Commander-in-Chief toward human suffering.

“Studies have been conducted into opening other fronts where the enemy has little experience & would be highly vulnerable,” supreme leader Khamenei said. “Their activation will take place if the state of war persists.” (Bloomberg)

The hubris of American foreign policy means never acknowledging/comprehending that actions taken abroad create ramifications at home.

My parents used to live in Kew Gardens and Manhattan. They told me that they never went south of Union Square. “Why would we do that?!"

I’ve lived in NYC for almost two decades and I’m constantly amazed how a noisy part of the country will consume conservative media about us, spend a week in Midtown Disney World w/ each other, and then be scared of taking a subway north of Rockefeller Center.

Xenophobia is a cancer.

I know this community very well. The Shenandoah club the Temple Israel statement refers to as providing food and shelter during this attack is the club established by Iraqi Chaldeans. This is really beautiful interfaith solidarity in action.

As a nation, we’re cooked. It’s every family for itself, at this point. Teach your kids media/tech literacy, inculcate a true love for reading and ideas, instill critical thinking skills, keep them human with the humanities. Gov x tech x media wants pliable voters and workers, not free-thinkers.

It’s incredible how you can write and rewrite a whole section of a chapter, put it aside for a few week, and returning to it, realize that it is so much chaff and unsorted wheat. Then, grinding and mixing it, you knead it into something that seems like it might be dough that’s worth baking.
