Remember all these headlines describing a brief rise in government borrowing costs as being "market mayhem", followed by a week of demands for Rachel Reeves to quit?

Well one week later and it turns out UK gilts are now outperforming every other G7 country this year, aside from the US

China’s EV sales set to overtake traditional cars years ahead of west Volumes forecast to rise 20% next year, smashing international projections and Beijing’s official targets

Thank you to everyone who argued that electric cars were rubbish and in the process allowed China to own the future of carmaking www.ft.com/content/0ebd...

The irreversible effect of football in 2024 and why ‘cold, hard money’ didn’t win Pep Guardiola has seen his philosophy evolve elsewhere, writes Miguel Delaney, while an intense schedule has led to drastic consequences in the latter months of the year

And there’s a huge irony in Guardiola facing by far his greatest challenges as a coach, in a year when his football and principles have never been more dominant or widespread

If football went to court in 2023, it went beyond that in 2024. It was a year that put in place the grounds for big changes in future

There are more than 10m children in school in the UK…but, per Times, 3,000 might move to state sector because of VAT rise…so Whitehall is “braced” 😲😲😲

Says a lot about UK media bubble, the way this story is reported.

You pay VAT on luxuries. Private schooling is that.

Some five-word horror stories for Friday the 13th:

Running out of tea bags
Someone talking in a lift
Unexpected knock on the door
Biscuit falling into your brew
Stuck on rail replacement bus
Forgetting to take an umbrella
Missing bin day before Christmas
Say a bit about yourself

Sterling close to its highest value against the Euro since the Brexit referendum. Markets appear to be rewarding the prospect of long term British political stability. Not something you’ve been able to say for a while.

If that disgusting racist and grifting liar Nigel Farage shouldn't have been on Question Time even once, nevermind 38 times.

Give this a Like, or better yet a RP.

Trump’s vote share is now at 49.9% with some votes still being counted. Looks like his margin over Harris will be around 1.5%- the third smallest winning margin since 1888.

Trump’s win was solid in the popular vote and electoral college. But it was not a landslide and it was not overwhelming.

Sigh - classic fact free nonsense. ‘news’ story here totally fails to mention that Tory plans were for fines of £5k (later reduced to £3k) for each missed heat pump sale. What @Ed_Miliband has done is to reduce that to £500. Headline should read “Miliband slashes Tory boiler tax”

Dumbarton FC and a "get-rich quick pipe dream" One of Scotland's oldest football clubs is in danger because it's been treated as a pawn in a wider game.

Afternoon, my dears, Off to Scotland today, where a second Scottish League One club this season has collapsed into administration. So it's off to Dumbarton, where there has been what looks very much to me like 'chichanery' going on.

From academy footballers to rejection, reflection, the marines… and The Athletic It's almost eight years since The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell left Bournemouth — he chats with former team-mates to discuss what happened next

Need a bedtime read? This, from @jacobtanswell.bsky.social, may well be the best article I've ever read on The Athletic.
What happened to Bournemouth's 2016 U16 side? Jacob knows because he was one of them.
