Wearily tapping the 'he's just saying words and they have no real meaning and cannot be taken as indications of actual policy or views or strategy or indeed anything with practical application' sign

Despite her having been (happily!) going to nursery for a while, had my first proper instance this morning of dropping my daughter off at nursery and immediately feeling very hollow and wanting to run back and get her because I missed her so much. Parenthood is a trip.

One for the 'signs things are Not Good' list, which also features:
- Lyse Doucet and Lindsey Hilsum on the news
- The FT running a liveblog
- The BBC News homepage having that particular layout

I am so full of admiration for Charlotte Nichols’ courage in talking about this - particularly awful that as a woman in public life she will have had to consider first how people might use this information against her, especially online. Hope she has all the support she needs.

Beyond reasonable doubt?: Reviewing proposed reforms to jury trials | Institute for Government There is a lot of uncertainty attached to the potential benefits of the government’s proposed reforms.

NEW REPORT: The government’s proposed reforms to criminal trials risk tilting the system too far towards speed over fairness and justice, and could lead to further declines in performance and productivity.

It is quite a worrying world where what Trump says matters more to the markets than what is objectively tangibly happening

On the one hand, the Strait has been effectively closed for a week and can’t get anymore closed.
On the other, the longer it stays closed the more production shuts down as storage runs out and the longer it takes to restore volumes when it finally does reopen.
