The Tlingit (Lingít) are an Indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest Coast (Southeast Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon) with a complex, matrilineal society rooted in a rich maritime, hunter-gatherer tradition. Known for their intricate art—including totem poles and formline design—they are organized into two main moieties (Raven and Eagle/Wolf). Their culture emphasizes kinship, oratory, and deep spiritual respect for the ocean, historically relying on salmon, berries, and game.

Okamoto Yoshiko (b. 1976)
Okamoto started as an illustration book artist and author in Yamaguchi prefecture, where she spent her young adult period depicting the beautiful four seasons and stories of nature found in her everyday life. Enrolling in arts and craft classes conducted by a Living National Treasure metalwork artist Yamamoto Akira (who also comes from Yamaguchi prefecture), shifted her direction to become a metalwork artist. After graduating college, she became a pupil of Mr.
Yamamoto and learned his specialized technique of Hagiawase (heat welding method with metal forging) and Kiribame-Zogan (heat welding method with cutout inlay). Her working motif has remained the same throughout her artist's career that is an endless story of nature woven by the four seasons in which she incorporates poetic and musical aspects. This is done by using gradation of many layers of colorful tones of metal.

Hagiawase (矧合) is a traditional Japanese metalworking technique involving the forging and heat-welding of different colored metals—such as copper, silver, shakudō, and shibuichi—to create intricate, multicolored, and often flowing patterns on a single, seamless surface. It is used to create art pieces, such as vases, and in samurai armor.

A Balinese singa is a mythical, winged lion creature serving as a protective guardian, symbol of strength, and ward against evil spirits in Balinese Hinduism. Often carved from wood or stone with a ferocious expression, bulging eyes, and fangs, these figures are commonly placed on roof corners, temples (puri), or homes, similar to gargoyles. The hindu carvers of Bali believed that the living wood could be imbued with the actual protective spirit by consecration in a ritual. Westerners may see a work of art, but the creator no doubt also saw a deeply spiritual object!

In her Portrait of Père Ubu, Maar created one of Surrealism’s most striking images. Using extreme close-up and dramatic lighting in an otherwise unmanipulated photograph, she made a nightmarish apparition from a baby armadillo. Both horrific and comical, it is a fitting embodiment of Père Ubu, the obese blundering monster Alfred Jarry created in his notorious play Ubu Roi (1896).

Surrealist photographs were also used to reveal the strangeness of the world we think we know, often by simply presenting it in a new way. Dora Maar titled her photograph of a baby armadillo after the anti-hero of Alfred Jarry’s famously transgressive and iconoclastic play Ubu Roi (1896), which was much admired by the Surrealists.

The close-up image of the animal’s unfamiliar form is startling in itself, but by connecting the armadillo to Père Ubu, Maar created an emotional resonance for viewers familiar with the character. Suddenly, the small animal is transformed into a large, greedy, and violent human being — what was perhaps merely strange becomes monstrous. This is possible in part because of the way the photograph distorts our sense of scale by close-cropping and isolating the animal within the frame.

Teotihuacan culture cult mask depicting the idealized face of a high-ranking individual, probably a lord or dignitary invested with a ritual function. The modeling is marked by great sobriety, entirely based on the balance of volumes and the accuracy of proportions. The deeply carved almond-shaped eyes, with elongated eyelids, give the gaze an introspective, calm, and vigilant expression.
Circa 450-650 CE.

Anthropomorphic pendant depicting the head of a Maya lord shown in profile. The finely carved face is distinguished by a hieratic expression characteristic of elite
representations, with full lips, a strongly defined nose, and almond-shaped eyes. The figure wears an elaborate headdress dominated by a stylized animal figure with an elongated snout and a prominent fang. The ear, integrated into the profile, is adorned with a circular ornament.
The overall composition, with its deliberately composite and serpentiform forms, does not allow for a precise iconographic identification.

A huge vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade mixed metals sterling silver and copper modernist brutalist cocktail ring. Entirely handmade piece of wearable modernist art jewelry! Hand fabricated, not case, using copper sheet for the band, a large nugget of copper at top, and heavy sterling wire that frames the copper band, and circles around to form prongs at top to hold the copper nugget! Such a unique no doubt one of a kind creation of artist jewelry! Measures 1-3/8" by 1" wide at top, size 7 US, and weighs a substantial 17.3 grams total. Unmarked, and likely originally sold in an art gallery or fair with paperwork or labeling that has been lost over the years. Tested and guaranteed to be exactly as described. Excellent vintage condition.

Spiders in the Colima culture of ancient West Mexico (ca. 300 BC – 600 AD) were significant symbolic figures often depicted in terracotta zoomorphic vessels. These ceramic pieces, commonly found in shaft tombs, suggest that spiders held a complex, likely supernatural, role in their cosmology, connecting the earthly realm with the underworld.
Spiders are frequently represented in burial contexts, suggesting they functioned as protective entities or spiritual guardians for the deceased in the shaft tombs.
Similar to other Mesoamerican traditions, the spider was seen as a "weaver" of reality, representing the creative force and the ability to rebuild or transform, often linked to the cycles of life and death.
n broader pre-Hispanic contexts, including the nearby, roughly contemporary cultures in Peru (Cupisnique), spider imagery is closely associated with water, rain, and fertility, acting as a deity that brings necessary life forces.

Henri Laurens, who associated closely with the avant-garde painters of his native Paris, worked in a Cubist idiom from 1915. In about 1920 he turned from the production of bas-reliefs and frontalized constructions to the execution of more classically ordered, freestanding sculptures. Head of a Young Girl may have appeared originally as a drawing. However, in this bust Laurens expresses Cubist painting principles in essentially sculptural terms. The tilted surfaces and geometric volumes of the sculpture interpenetrate to constitute a compact whole. Circling the piece, the viewer perceives dramatically different aspects of the head, which provide a variety of visual experiences unexpected in a form so schematically reduced.
The structuring planes of one side of the head are broad and unadorned; its edges and planar junctures form strong, uninterrupted curves and straight lines. The other side is articulated with detail; its jagged, hewn contour describing hair contrasts rhythmically with the sweeping curve of the opposite cheek. Laurens slices into the polyhedron that determines the facial planes to describe nose, upper lip, and chin at one stroke. The subtle modeling, particularly of the almond eye and simplified mouth, produces nuanced relations of light and shadow. Despite the geometric clarity of structure, the delicacy of the young girl’s features and her self-contained pose create a gentle, meditative quality.

At the height of the Lan Na kingdom's artistic refinement, this powerful Buddha Shakyamuni head embodies a sculptural language defined by presence, stillness, and profound inner balance.
The broad, architecturally
structured face, the gently lowered almond-shaped eyes, and the subtle, restrained smile create an expression of deep meditation. The finely arranged spiral curls and pronounced ushnisha enhance its vertical strength and spiritual authority.

A rugged nodular vintage 1970s handmade sterling silver and malachite brutalist modernist cocktail ring. Entirely handmade hand fabricated with heavy gauge sterling silver wire and sheet that has been torch cut and textured, not cast! Interestingly, a malachite cabochon has been prong-set not bezel-set. And what prongs! Each is unique, and they resemble natural stalactites or stalagmites in a cavern! An incredible one of a kind piece of wearable modernist brutalist art jewelry! Measures 1-1/4" by 1" at top, rises 3/4" above the finger, size 6 US, and weighs a hefty 29 grams total or nearly one troy ounce. Could be sized up or down a few sizes by a professional silversmith if desired. Unmarked. Tested and guaranteed to be exactly as described. No doubt originally sold in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork that has been lost over the years. In any case, it’s an extraordinary modernist cocktail ring! One corner of the stone has a natural vein of a matrix material that to the untrained eye might look like a crack, but it's completely natural and an interesting feature of this natural untreated stone. Excellent vintage condition.

In 1923, in his book Vers une architecture (Towards a New Architecture), architect and designer Le Corbusier declared houses to be “machines for living in.” While this phrase speaks to his belief that good design should be functional, Le Corbusier was equally invested in marrying utilitarianism with “poetry, beauty, and harmony.” Rejecting earlier movements like Art Nouveau for their celebration of ornament, historical nostalgia, and lack of functionality, he embraced the work of American engineers—in the form of machines, factory complexes, and grain silos—as a foundation for a new, modern architectural language.

Charles-Edouard Jeanneret adopted the name “Le Corbusier” (derived from a family surname, Lecorbésier) for his architectural persona in 1920. A prolific writer and lecturer, he founded the influential magazine L’Esprit nouveau with French painter Amédée Ozenfant and Belgian writer Paul Dermée in 1919. In the journal’s first several issues, Le Corbusier articulated his thoughts about “volume,” “surface,” and “plan,” which he considered the central components of modern architecture and urban planning. He republished these essays in Vers une architecture, in which he also famously described the "five points of architecture”: pilotis (reinforced-concrete columns), the free plan, the free facade, horizontal bands of windows, and the roof garden.
