Why do political views have to be selective when it comes to accountability? It's just instrumental moralism that fits a weak moral narrative, where were these people when JFK, a sitting US president, was posthumously defamed by the extremists?
A moral imperative (cf. Kant) is supposed to be universal. If you believe in free speech, you defend it even when it protects speech you hate, not only when it benefits your side.
