Randolph Woman Pleads Guilty To Mail Theft A Randolph woman has pleaded guilty to mail theft in U.S. District Court. U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that 47-year old Melissa Olson pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge John Sinatra Jr. to theft of mail by postal employee. She faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Olson was hired by the United States Postal Service in 2020 as a rural carrier associate assigned to the Randolph Post Office. In May 2023, the USPS Office of Inspector General received information that a $200 Visa gift card was stolen from the mail.

Jamestown Man Pleads Guilty To Drug Trafficking, Kidnapping A Jamestown man has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and kidnapping in U.S. District Court. U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that 31-year old Dwayne Lowery, aka Chi Chi, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Lawrence Vilardo to possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and kidnapping. The charges carry a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of life, and a fine of $5,000,000. On December 7, 2022, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Lowery’s West Cowden Place residence, seizing approximately 59 grams of fentanyl, $1,140 in cash, and drug paraphernalia.

Second Person Arrested In July 2025 Shooting A second person has been arrested in connection with a shooting last summer. Jamestown Police said that 24-year old Ian Sanchez has been arrested for attempted murder and 1st Degree assault. On July 24, 2025, a male victim with gunshot wounds that caused severe injuries was found in the area off East Second and Cheney Streets. Police arrested 23-year old Xavier Ramos for 1st Degree Assault and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Ramos is currently in jail. Sanchez was arrested March 6 and arraigned March 9 in Chautauqua County Court. He has been sent to the Chautauqua County Jail on $100,000 bail.

Crime Is Down 2.35% In Jamestown For 2025 Crime is down 2.35% in the City of Jamestown for 2025. Now retired Police Chief Tim Jackson relayed that news in the Public Safety Annual Report. 2025-JPD-Annual-Report There was one murder in 2025 where 62-year old Michael Jaeckle was killed with a crossbow. 58-year old David Nelson has been indicted on 2nd Degree Murder charges in that case. Borrello Suggest Using Albany County’s Model Of Housing Homeless In Underutilized, Vacant Jails State Senator George Borrello has suggested using underutilized or vacant jails to house the homeless, following a similar model being done in Albany County. NYS Plan To Add Sidewalks To Fairmount Avenue In Lakewood Has Detractors A public hearing on New York State’s proposal to add sidewalks to parts of Fairmount Avenue in the village of Lakewood brought out naysayers Thursday night. Nearly 50 people attended the hearing at Busti Town Hall about the 2.5 mile proposed construction project on Route 394 that stretches from Route 474/Ashville Road to Elmcrest Avenue. Chautauqua County, Jamestown Awarded $500,000 Total To Expand Affordable Housing Opportunities Chautauqua County and the City of Jamestown have been awarded a total of $500,000 to help expand housing opportunities. The funding is a Pro-Housing Communities Technical Assistance Grant through the New York State Homes & Community Renewal Pro-Housing Communities Program. In Jamestown, the grant will fund contractual legal services to help accelerate the city’s acquisition of abandoned properties. The legal process required to take control of vacant and distressed properties is often extensive, involving multiple filings, court proceedings, and compliance steps that can be both costly and time-consuming. Dedicated legal support will help the City move these cases forward more efficiently and bring long-neglected properties back into productive use.

JCC Uncommoners To Present ‘Biloxi Blues’ Jamestown Community College Uncommoners are presenting a production of “Biloxi Blues” at Scharmann Theatre starting this Friday. The play, written by Neil Simon, is a story that follows young Army recruits during World War II as they go through basic training in Mississippi. The humor grows out of their daily lives, but the play also explores deeper struggles. Themes of the play include war, abuse, and bigotry. County Legislature Increases Income Limit For Senior Citizen Property Tax Exemption The Chautauqua County Legislature has increased the income level for those who may qualify for the Senior Real Property Tax Exemption. Legislators unanimously passed an amended resolution that raised the current income for the exemption from $30,000 to $32,000. The resolution, as proposed by Democrats had originally sought to raise the income level to $38,000. Republican Legislator Dan Pavlock said committee members came to the conclusion that the $38,000 income limit would result in not so much a tax break as a “tax shift,” “It would burden the rest of the taxpayers, and since, and so we had a discussion around what that burden looked like.

Audubon Pie Auction Fundraiser Bidding Starts Friday Bidding for the Audubon Community Nature Center’s annual Pie Auction Fundraiser will start this Friday. The fundraiser coincides with Pi Day, which takes place on March 14. Online bidding starts at 12:15 a.m. tomorrow at AudubonCNC.org/Pie-Auction and ends at 11:45 p.m., Wednesday, March 11. Homemade pies are created by Audubon staff, board members, and volunteer bakers. They will feature savory main dishes to desserts. Winners must be able to pick up their pies in-person at the Nature Center on Saturday, March 14 between noon and 4:30 p.m. All pies will be in a dish that is yours to keep or recycle.

Untitled Nominations are being sought for the 2026 Jamestown Community College alumni awards. Since 1980, the Alumni Association has presented accomplished alumni with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the association’s highest honor. The award is given to those who have typified the college’s tradition of excellence and brought credit to the college through personal accomplishment, professional achievement, or humanitarian service. Nominations are due by June 1 by completing the web form at sunyjcc.edu/Alumni/Awards/Nomination. A full listing of past recipients is also available on this JCC alumni webpage. All nominations are reviewed by a selection committee which includes representatives of the Alumni Association board of directors, and JCC faculty and staff. Awards will be presented at the JCC Foundation Awards Gala this Fall.

City Shares How People Can Report Housing Complaints The Jamestown Department of Development is sharing how people can report housing concerns now that Spring is arriving. Deputy Director of Housing Policy and Development Kasie Foulk gave a presentation to Jamestown City Council members on the options available to the public. She said those wishing to call in a concern may do so by calling DOD Office Manager Elizabeth Torres at 716-483-7542.
