Spring in Vermont.
Coming 8.4.26. 📚💔
Just so you know: no one pays a Vermonter to do what’s right or protest or take a stand against savagery and cruelty. We are a land of empathy…but we don’t back down. Just like the courageous citizens of Oregon, California, and Minnesota. That is all. Good-night.
“THE AMATEUR is a joyous novel…” — Clare Leslie Hall, the brilliant author of BROKEN COUNTRY, one of my very favorite novels. Thank you, Clare! Color me gobsmacked — and grateful. Preorder your copy of THE AMATEUR wherever you buy your books — and read BROKEN COUNTRY if you haven’t already.
I am never more proud of my heritage than when surrounded by brilliant #Armenian artists and thinkers. Right now, a museum in Massachusetts is celebrating two. Click the link to read my essay about my experience and what I saw. open.substack.com/pub/chrisboh...
A pause to appreciate paws. Also? The face I come home to.

And the vault!!!!
Never prouder of my Armenian heritage than when surrounded by brilliant Armenian artists and thinkers. Today I was at the Armenian Museum of America in Watertown, MA to see magnificent new paintings by Serj Tankian of System of a Down and Arshile Gorky!
Had the best time today at Boston Playwrights Theatre to see the world premiere of “Zabel in Exile,” by R.N. Sandberg and directed by Megan Sandberg-Zakian. In the cast of the powerful drama? My amazing Grace Experience. Super proud dad. Also? I loved participating in talk-back after the matinee.
Drop everything and read this. You’ll thank me. It is a wonder — and why we read novels. @tayari.bsky.social @aaknopf.bsky.social
Jesse’s face when I told her Kristi Noem was fired.
Jesse and I are LOVING these longer days!
So, how long until the fired and “disgraced” (and disgraceful) Kristi Noem is hired by the Goebbels-like propagandists at Fox News ?
Great day at the bookstore! I know what I’m reading this weekend — the new novel from the brilliant Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney! @barnesandnoble.com
Look for this gem this summer!
I am about to wake her to bring her to bed. Good-night.
I thought about Hamnet and how art springs from the subterranean parts of our soul and is given form by conscious planning. It reminded me of my experience writing THE AMATEUR. My essay about that part of my life is now live on Substack: tinyurl.com/3j854r8d
I can’t wait for you to meet Mira…the amateur. Learn more here: chrisbohjalian.com .
Happiest of pub days to the brilliant Gin Phillips on a banger of a book. Get your copy of RUBY FALLS this week!
To all my friends who read and readers who are friends in and around New Jersey: Please join me next month.
The word of the day is "empathy." It means actually giving two fucks about people's pain and trying not to make the world more of a dumpster fire than it has to be. Look, we all know the planet spins toward chaos and entropy. . .but if you are a person with power, consider "empathy."
She was.
Good-night.
Thanks!
Read this interview with Christina Applegate by Elisabeth Egan of @nytimes.com and file it under a real profile in courage.
Magic hour.
