On this International Womenโs Day, I cannot stop thinking about all the girls in Iran, in Sudan, in Gaza, and so may places โ girls whose lives were snuffed out in conflicts they played no part in, before they could ever become women.
And I am thinking about their mothers.
Your platform's systemic discrimination against palestinians is not a conspiracy.
but look how many lines of code i can spit out whilst i sleep using the billionaire-owned suicide-inducing planet-killing war machine
pls listen to yourself
I was thinking about trying Zed again, but perhaps I will try this first.
It's an opinionated fork, and I like the opinions.

It seems we can now customize the select element, right? right?!

In its bombing of the Iranian people, Israel targeted a girls school killing at least 51 students.
Iranian women & girls are used & then murdered by both the tyrannical regime & US/Israel as a means to a political agenda.
Killing Iranian children does not create a feminist utopia.
I would like to remind people that AI has already been used to kill people
OpenAI and Microsoft supplied Israel with AI models to track and kill people in Gaza which led to increased civilian deaths

same :( this is why I'm considering going back to uni to get a degree in a non-tech related field. it sucks because I (used to) enjoy coding but I can't see myself having a career in tech anymore
i built an entire x86 CPU emulator in CSS (no javascript)
you can write programs in C, compile them to x86 machine code with GCC, and run them inside CSS

the "open source LLMs running locally" idea is very naive
nobody in the OS community has the resources to build an LLM "from scratch" - mainly ppl use a variant of Llama - meta's LLM - trained on stolen data that was cleaned by underpaid workers in global south - and thus exhibit the same biases
we live in interesting times (derogatory)
Social media continue to apply the policy that doing genocide is acceptable, but objecting to genocide is not, and suffering genocide is even less welcome.
More people should listen to @tressiemcphd.bsky.social
When people say AI is inevitable, let them know the future isnโt settled.
both solid competitors but after "Someone accustomed to burlap is different from someone who wears silk" you have to give this round to Blazer Unc
Iโm not arguing with no account defending AI. My grandmother lives in an area being environmentally compromised currently by an ai data center. I remember the color of the lake before they built it and the sludge I see in it when I go to see her. Shut the fuck up about โthe benefits of AIโ forever.
The big AI push is attempting to legitimize the bots. The same soulless, automated, spam generating things no one wants to interact with.
Scott Riley tested free and open source design tools out when researching his course, Mindful Design. They actually worked out better than Figma ever could, as he explains in this article with loads of options for you.

Everything is stressful and bad and weird so here's another thread of tech jobs I've found where you make the world better (or at least hopefully not make it worse)
I've started cross-posting these to my blog to make them easier to find, including some jobs not listed in the thread
Similar to how AI was used to target Palestinians
Person: say, i am alive. Computer: I am alive. Person: oh my god.
fwiw I don't think it is possible to build genAI in such a way that it benefits workers rather than capital because it is fundamentally based on non consensual extraction of labour to get going. what would it actually mean for the workers to own the means of production here
1. AI does not have feelings just like a printer doesn't have feelings
2. Anthropic destroyed millions of print books to build its AI models. They did not care about destroying other's work and stealing their work. But apparently they care about the "feelings" of AI
"Learn Accessibility" is a course that takes you through the essentials for building accessible websites and web apps. Created for both beginners and advanced users, this course can be taken beginning to end, or used as a reference for specific topics.

The @diversifytech.com newsletter goes out tomorrow!
If you're hiring for technical roles and actually care about inclusive hiring (real work-life balance, ethical company), we can get your jobs in front of 20k+ underrepresented folks in tech.
Post them here: jobs.diversifytech.com!
I'm excited to release Just the Browser! It helps you remove AI features, ads, shopping integrations, and other annoyances from desktop web browsers.
This project includes configuration files, a simple setup script, and guides for manual installation. It supports Chrome, Firefox, and MS Edge.
Well this is remarkable. ๐ฎ
Someone built a 3D voxel engine using plain olโ DOM nodes, no canvas/webgl. And itโs surprisingly performant, since it culls any faces that arenโt currently visible.

Thereโs even a nifty lilโ editor!
it is still inefficient. it still hallucinates. it still makes slop that displaces real people's jobs. but i suppose now we know about its effect on communities living near datacentres and its possibility to destroy the consumer electronics market. i guess claude code makes up for all that to you
we're not doing "people who criticise genAI don't understand it and are ignoring its utility" any more. get better material
