We assume the current Flock cameras will be swapped out for these Axon models in the same locations, but since the total number is being doubled, we don't yet know where the new ones will be installed.

Advocates want Syracuse to sever ICE ties. Will the council listen? Civil rights organizations called on councilors to not renew contracts with businesses that work for ICE and profit from deportations

We call on Syracuse Common Council to allow democratic participation, and uphold racial & immigrant justice by introducing the Melt the Contracts resolution. /11

Syracuse Police Department leaders publicly expressed interest in sharing data from Axon cameras with other counties and state agencies.

Such arrangements lead to misuse, over-policing, and harm to Black, brown, immigrant, Indigenous, and working class communities. /10

Directing resources toward surveillance rather than housing, healthcare, and transportation fails to address real needs. /9

Syracuse lawmakers approve contract for Axon license plate readers, plan to block Flock Safety from city streets Syracuse lawmakers plan to ground Flock Safety readers about a year and a half after introducing them to city streets.

The Council did approve the legislation authorizing Axon, using technology powered by AI, to install 26 license plate surveillance cameras. This decision commits nearly half a million dollars in public funds, while nearly 1 in 4 residents live in poverty. /8

The use of police to suppress public testimony is unacceptable and is part of criminalizing civic engagement. We affirm our full support for the right of community members to speak out and hold elected officials accountable! /7

The Common Council ultimately called police to forcibly remove two community members. During this removal, a member of DSA was physically shoved.

We condemn this unacceptable use of force. /6

The Council did not provide a fair opportunity for public comment on the Axon contract, continuing a lack of transparency by the Council. /5

During the meeting, people tried to address the Council but were repeatedly denied the right to speak. Our anger is a just demand that elected officials do the bare minimum to respond to fascism. /4

We also protested the Council’s refusal to hear community opinions regarding a $422,000 contract with Axon Enterprises to install license plate surveillance cameras across the city. Axon has a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). /3

The Common Council recently supported NY for All – they must not do business with companies that profit from deporting our neighbors. /2

On February 9, community members attended the Syracuse Common Council meeting at City Hall to demand the introduction of the Melt the Contracts resolution, which would limit city contracts with companies that profit from detainment and deportations. /1
