I don't want to oversell it, but PROJECT HAIL MARY is alternately hilarious, heartrending, and thrilling—it's just pretty close to perfect pop entertainment. Early contender for best of the year, certainly in the blockbuster division. www.thebulwark.com/p/project-ha...
"Spectacularly ill-conceived from start to finish and stuffed to the gills with lots of Big Choices from stars Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale while having only the loosest grasp of the ideas it is playing with." @sonnybunch.bsky.social reviews "The Bride!": lnk.thebulwark.com/4d5q6O8
NEW: Every day it feels like we're slouching closer toward one of those near-future dystopian parodies. Our @sonnybunch.bsky.social looks at the insanity of the headlines and the movies they resemble.

I'm starting to think we're living in a dystopian parody, a cross between SOUTHLAND TALES and BRAZIL with a dash of HER and THE TERMINATOR. Buckle up, things are going to get weird. www.thebulwark.com/p/every-day-...
I've long argued @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social's pod, The Focus Group, is the best thing you can listen to if you want to understand how *actual voters* think. She talks to them! You hear them! Needless to say, I'm preordering a copy of her book. You should too! www.amazon.com/dp/125046417...
"If you see a critic describe a film as interesting, or praise the director and stars for taking a 'big swing,' you know you’re in for an 'interesting' movie. "The Bride!" is an 'interesting' movie."
@sonnybunch.bsky.social reviews: lnk.thebulwark.com/4d5q6O8
It’s a big interesting mess, for sure!
The only reason I didn’t mind these, honestly, is that Bale is doing something different and interesting in each of them. Ironically, given the film’s penchant for overtly stating its feminist themes, he has a better handle on Frank than either Buckley (or Gyllenhaal) does on The Bride.
THE BRIDE is a complete mess, just spectacularly misconceived. Doesn’t really work on any level. Frequently quite annoying, at least when it isn’t incomprehensible. But I was never bored! www.thebulwark.com/p/the-bride-...
Oh that's great! Yeah I had him on the show for a bonus episode, wanted to get it out there before this tour was over. I'm sure it'll be a fun chat!
TONIGHT! I’ll be hosting a Q&A with SIRĀT director Oliver Laxe and screenwriter Santiago Fillol following the 7pm show at the Coolidge. And our friend @jshawhan.bsky.social is handling the Nashville screening on Sunday, so obviously these people have great taste in moderators.
One time the internet was out and my kids were like "aw we can't watch TOY STORY" and I was like "I HAVE WAITED MY WHOLE LIFE FOR SOMEONE TO SAY THAT."
SIRAT is nominated for best international feature and best sound. I interviewed the director, Oliver Laxe, about finding community in the end of the world at a rave. Great interview, incredibly interesting movie. I hope you see it in a theater! www.thebulwark.com/p/sirat-and-...
This was a lot of fun and hopefully informative for viewers!
Paramount may be a better or worse owner of WB than Netflix. One thing that's certain: the process by which Paramount gained control of WB is grotesque and un-American. www.thebulwark.com/p/paramount-...
Netflix is probably marginally less bad but only if you believe they’ll continue releasing movies in theaters. If I’m a regulator I’m extracting a guarantee of some sort that they’ll continue to do so.
I was kind of worried @timmiller.bsky.social was going to have to do this alone, bad for his mental health. Thankfully @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social is here to share the load. open.substack.com/live-stream/...
I’ll get to that right after Heated Rivalry.
Reddit AMA is LIVE. I'll start answering questions when I'm inside the House chamber and the speech begins, around 9pm. www.reddit.com/r/politics/c...
These are the images I couldn’t get out of my mind:
funny convo with @sonnybunch.bsky.social and @timmiller.bsky.social about dumbass's speech.
i would offer two extra notes to the lads:
—the backlight is high and centred—trump saw dante spinotti do that constantly on the "melania" set.
—weekend watch: "strip law" on netflix.

My goodness…I highly recommend this episode, whether you watch it or listen to it.
it's so ridiculous and yet so real
Hey you know what I really enjoyed? NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE. The thing I enjoyed the most about it? It manages to be both pastiche and referential and completely unique and deeply heartfelt. Good movie! www.thebulwark.com/p/how-a-cana...
same tbh
the children crave weekly installments of high-quality procedurals!

The Oscar-nominated THE ALABAMA SOLUTION is a harrowing doc. You don't have to be an ardent prison reformer—I'm not—to be horrified by what it shows. I talked to directors Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman about how they got their incredible footage. www.thebulwark.com/p/oscar-nomi...
