I believe it's for Linux only however. The nice thing with BDF files however is that these are very easy to parse and manipulate.

Ah, I think I have seen that once! I believe I ultimately didn't use it since it exports them as vector fonts. It is much nicer to use however.

I mostly use pretty much any image editor that lets me pixel (Aseprite, Paint.NET, Krita) to plan out the design.
Then I either organize them in a grid & save it as an image that can be sliced in game engines or whatever or by redoing it as an BDF font file through ancient software and loading that.

This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.
