I think there's a "mad scientist" fallacy. Like "non-ethical acts are the ones that would otherwise be most effective; non-scrupulous actors tend to have an advantage over others."

My best understanding is that these arguments have an unstated assumption that an entity smarter than humanity would soon obtain practically magical powers for getting and doing whatever it wants. (e.g. your arbitrary matter converters, your mind control drones, your perfect predictors)
