I knew Bates was a stopover when I read this in the NYT. Clearly wasn’t house hunting in Lewiston (Bates’ town) which is anything but an “upwardly mobile suburb.” Maine still offered a convenient narrative for his edgy thoughts. Over before it started. Gritty Lewiston would never satisfy his ego.

His outward contempt is for women, Black people and anyone that he thinks isn’t as smart as he is. But the real contempt is inward and for himself.

As the parent of a kid who was at Bates while he was there, I agree. But I am also grateful that Bates was clearly not the place for TAH. Something made the school undesirable to him and that’s redeeming to me. Not sure why he was quietly gone but Bates is better for it.

Yes, understood and agree. I appreciate the response. Just don’t like to see a good school - that actually doesn’t have a huge endowment compared to its peers and is in Lewiston, Maine, a place that many people don’t even want to drive through - further tainted by TAH.

He taught at Bates (briefly). I only know this bc he was a prof when my kid was there and he wrote some really shitty other pieces during that time. Not sure when or why he left but please don’t assume anything about Bates based on this guy. He’s had a chip on his shoulder for a while, unknown why.

Thank you for saying all of this. This has been very hard for me. Recently my therapist said some of us walk right towards the “hard things” but you have to accept that not everyone will walk with you. Some people will not acknowledge the pain and suffering of others. That is sinking in now.
