An historic moment yesterday as pieces of the shrine of St William of York, removed in the Reformation, returned to the nave of York Minster after a 500-year absence.

See them in the Minster’s undercroft museum from this weekend, with free admission for York residents (bring proof of address).

York Minster, seen along a dark Chapter House Street. Honestly, the jump from December to January was feeling like quite a jolt, until I was reminded that it means Yorkshire forced rhubarb season approaches! And besides, it’s Christmas until Candlemas, right?

My Christmas cake decoration this year is a scale model of York Minster fashioned from marzipan surrounded by 12 edible choristers

For the Feast of St. Celicia, 22nd November.

A representation of the patron saint of music plays the mediaeval portative organ: one hand operating a keyboard; the other, the bellows.

I agree; I suppose at least Potions Cauldron and the like aren't selling anything licensed (or pretending to be), so aren't contributing directly but tangentially benefitting from the increased interest in 'wizard' themes. I miss Via Vecchia, though.

September. Late summer or autumn?

This image from Jez of York compresses centuries of rooftops into a beautiful golden vista so redolent of historic York.

We love the way in which the lancet windows of the North Transept, the iconic Five Sisters, stand out so beautifully.

An evening walk on York’s medieval city walls.

The earthworks on which it is built are older, and this stretch probably follows the western perimeter of the Roman colonia - the civilian area of the city south of the River Ouse, with the military fortress on the other side.
